Guys
5/24/05
Had a chance to get out testing a bit last night with different secondary clutch springs. Heres the 2 grizzs and how they were setup before the testing started
Grizz #1 - 2003
Mods:
-2 TPI Valves installed in airbox, set to 1 closed and 1 open 1/2"
-ITP C Series on Stock 25" Tires
-Machined Primary and Secondary Clutch
-Spring Spacer mod for secondary
-Stock Primary weights
-EPI Engagement springs for internal clutch
-EPI Secondary Spring
This Grizz had a full tank of fuel
Grizz #2 - 2004
Mods
-2 TPI Valves in air box set like Grizz #1
-Stock Tires and Rims
-EPI Clutch Kit designed for stock tires (minus engagement springs)
-Stock Primary and secondary sheaves (not machined)
We raced appx .2 of a mile and grizz #1 was 1/2 length ahead, then pulled to 1-2 length lead and slowley pulled ahead. Top end was about 1 MPH different.
I changed Grizz #1s secondary spring to a Stock spring plus spring spacer, total height difference between springs and shim equaled the width of a coil. Raced and in the same .2 mile, Grizz #1 had 1 1/2 lengths lead and pulled to appx 4 length and gained more the longer we ran. Saw 68 consistantly on the speedo where before it was 67.
Then changed Grizz #2s secondary spring from EPI blue to a Dalton Pink. Raced and at the .2 mile mark this grizz was just about neck and neck with Grizz #1. Grizz #1 would still pull about 1 1/2 lenghth but that was it. About Identical top end between the 2 but the grizz with the machined clutches has a definate advantage between say 50-65 MPH, thats where it puts the lengths on the other.
I should also note, I weigh 215 (grizz #1) and the guy on grizz #2 weighs 185. So there is a 30 lb difference between riders
Now heres the interesting part. I had my radar gun along to just compare real numbers to the speedo. When Grizz #1 reads 67, the radar shows 3 mph slower. Also, the gains we experienced were backed up with factual MPH #s by use of the radar gun. At the .2 mile mark before the mods. Grizz #1 showed 59 on radar vs 61 after the mods. Grizz #2 showed 58 on radar vs 60 after the mods.
Summary, Grizzlys like alot of secondary spring and you will not sacrifice top end like i thought i might. One other thing to consider is spring sack. Could it be that over the 1000 miles these bikes have on them ,the spring lost some force. Absolutely. On snowmobiles I change primary and secondary springs every season because they will loose some of there strength. So I guess what Im saying, is I would highly recommend that you freshen up your secondary spring on an annual basis to assure your bike is running the best it can. More to come, would like to get some testing done with Mr Sleds grizz which has 26" mud lites. More to come...BBY

Tom, not sure if you are going to be driving by Wausau motorsports, but if so, pick up a new secondary spring. I will find a shim that will work...BBY

The machine has less then 600 miles on it and the spring that is on the machine maybe has 100 miles on it. I really think the true test would be take my tires off and put it on your ATV and see what the top end is, then I will be sold. I will not spend another penny on that ATV with out seat of the pants proof. The pipe, K&N and the 2 clutch kits where not worth any of the improvments that they made. Waste of money.
Kevin from Port with the stock machine and the same tires will run side by side with my Grizz all the way up so what did I gain...nothing.

if you didnt re-jet for the k&n,pipe you probably didnt get anything.unless its a gross set-up error from the factory, pipes are a waste of money.look at the sport atv's-500 to 700 dollars for a pipe/muffler to gain 2 ponies is rediculous for the 95% general user.the only machine with a great responce is a pipped and jetted banshee when compared to stock.without headwork or a cam change there usually is no seat of the pants feel...this is my general opinion of course.i would think you should gain some lower end accelleration with a pipe and k&n with the jett kit though.

I agree, I did jet and it did nothing...the pipe is a quiet series and the loud pipes most likely are the ones that make power....but who wants to drive it like that.

Seat of the pants you say???
It's all starting to make sense why you got that nekkid sport bike and ride it around while wearing a thong.
