Is detonation more detrimental at high boost level's than low such as 8lb verses12-14 or more? It would seem to me that the higher the boost (more cyl pressure) detonation would be much more violent. Also, can detonation be felt or noticed in any way. A friend of mine had a Nitrous problem on a RX-1 that caused detonation and he said it felt like a rev limiter and made several passes till the ring's were stuck. I guess i was thinking you should feel some interruption in pull or a change in sound. Thanks

I can tell ya from 1st hand experience it takes 3.4958713 seconds to detonate 2 pistons in a rx-1 at 25 pounds boost using 91 octane!!!!!

I only went 300 ft and detonated on 22 psi ,one piston and rod .I have two tanks ,one for race fuel and the other for 91 oct.forgot to turn the race one on and 91 oct is not the right fuel. Now I have meth ,no more detonation.

You guy's are running a lot of boost! I only plan to run 8lb on premium but am concerned with getting some less than 91 fuel. Maybe i could back it down to 7lb for a bit more margin of safety? Can the meth system be trusted, One glitch and pop goes the weasel. Other than that meth sounds like a cure all. Thanks

I thought i was running 8 pounds boost. The fact that my feet were straight behind me pointing backwards & hitting 100 mph in 500' told me my calculations were slightly off.

We have Dyno tested an Rx1 at 18lbs boost using meth and pump gas.It made 300hp.We have also had Nitros running at about 17lbs boost with a stock engine using meth and pump gas.We have tested the meth and pump gas on a 10to1 compression engine at 456hp.All with absolutly no detonation. Our Hurricane meth kit is set up with sleds in mind and works exellent

What does a kit for an Apex cost and can you rely on it to work. It sound's like detonation at 20 plus lb boost is almost instant disaster. Is it the same on low boost like 8lb or is low boost and det more forgiving. I realize you would not want to continue to detonate but i guess what i am wondering is at 8lb and one slight glitch certain disaster?HURRICANE said:We have Dyno tested an Rx1 at 18lbs boost using meth and pump gas.It made 300hp.We have also had Nitros running at about 17lbs boost with a stock engine using meth and pump gas.We have tested the meth and pump gas on a 10to1 compression engine at 456hp.All with absolutely no detonation. Our Hurricane meth kit is set up with sleds in mind and works exellent

As you said, increased cylinder pressure does contribute but it's actually the heat that is our enemy as fuel/air charge starts to ignite pre spark plug ignition creating a shockwave that slams on the piston when it's on its way towards top dead center, it's like a sledgehammer punching on the piston and rings.
At 8 lbs you should be pretty safe, but then again it depends on what compression ratio and fuel octane you are running.

When I first started out every thing was stock running 91 oct and two headgaskits .I could run 10 psi all day .As I put the boost up I used the av gas 50/50 was good for 14 psi and right to 16 psi straight av gas .Ran for two seasons .This was on a front mount cpr turbo 2554

As long as that system does not fail or glitch.

The only true safe setup is stock. Any time you add boost you run the chance of failure.
A broken wire, bad ground, bad fuel controller, pinched line or leaking hoses could contribute to a blown engine. You take the chance by adding any extras to these machines. The more simple the better. They are mechanical and parts fail. People also make mistakes and may not be educated in the instillation process. Lots of things could go wrong. Preventive measures will be your friend when dealing with boost. Double grounds, sheathing over wires and hoses where they may rub, using the best components where possible, and planning for worst case scenarios will help, but failures can and will happen when you least expect it.
