I went out to start the sleds and i noticed a bulge in the side panel. i opened it up and it looks like the exhaust is rubbing the side panel. when i put the side plastic back on the panel is resting right on the tip of the exhaust. Is this happening to anyone else? what could i do to stop it before it goes all the way through?

I just noticed this on mine, mine went all last season and never melt through but just this past week I had my side panel off and noticed where it was melted in the same spot as yours.

Huh that's weird, i just asked because he only has 250-300 miles on the kit. i let it run for quite a wile to see how hot the heat shield on the muffler got and it never go so hot i couldn't hold on to it, so i wonder if is is just the muffler vibrating on the panel and wearing a hole into it? I think im going to try to put some heat tape on were it is putting a hole in it to make sure it wont go any farther.

This is something your dealer forgot to do, check for clearance. The plastics on these sleds all fit on with a large variance in tolerance, these are A.C. panels not perfect fitting Yamaha panels so they all fit differently depending on how the lower plastics are riveted on the chassis in relationship with gas tank plastics and it all affects the side panel clearance with your muffler. With our 2 vipers one of heat shields was touching the side panel and the other sled was fine. This was easy to notice during the MPI install so instead of trying to fix the A.C. panel tolerance issue its easier to just gently peen the mufflers heat shield on that corner over to give you about 1/4inch clearance. The muffler is insulated pretty good so its not so much a melting issue as dirtbikekid stated its more a rubbing issue from the vibrations.

No Problem Dirtbikekid. Just go easy with the hammer on that shield. When I did ours I remember that you can slid your hand in the panels front vent hole and check your tolerance with your finger.

I also had another muffler issue, the lower muffler mount on the left side off the muffler has a sharp edge that cut through the rubber bushing which in turn made the muffler come loose which broke the aluminum heat shield and caused some damage inside the muffler. After all this happened a source told me that some of the mufflers needs washers on that lower mount to make them fit more snug and others don't need them. Both issues were brought to their attention but I haven't recieved any replacement parts for damage caused by poor muffler fitment, having to throw washers on a mount to make stuff fit tighter on an aftermarket kit like this isn't right. Not trying to complain, but the mpi kit is the only one that I've seen or heard of these issues with and it's 100% in the kit and not the installer, yes the installer can do some things to prevent some possible issues, but they shouldn't need to even think about these types of potential problems.

I know the 2015 MPI kits came with a washer to snug up that rubber bushing your talking about, some sleds need it some don't. I think a lot of this goes back to we are all used to tight tolerances and perfect fit with Japan Yamaha sleds but these Yamacats don't quite have that perfection. But I have love this sled, its the best one I have ever owned even with its large tolerances on part it puts a smile on my face. :)

I love the sled, I love the turbo, the concept of the kit itself is top notch, but there's definitely areas that needed improvement, which mpi did, they changed the aluminum heat shield and now come with the better wastegate which my original stage 1 did not come with, but to get the upgraded parts and replacement parts I have had somewhat of a challenge..I don't want to pay full retail on an upgraded part that should've been on the kit from the start.

Studroes I hear you but if we all had the $ from the product testing all of us guinee pigs in the snowmobile world have had to spend 1,2 or even 3 times to get things right we wouldn't have to have jobs! High risk and high rewards sometimes. That said if we didn't take risk and keep paying to go faster I don't think the manufacturers would ever bring new go fast stuff out. Good luck getting it fixed.

I had the same heat trouble with my OSP turbo. Just go to the auto parts store and buy some adhesive backed heat tape and stick on your panel and problem is solved. 2500 miles after putting tape on last year and no more problems.

Or just put on the MPI race can - no clearance problems there!
I think he would like it better but I don't think the game wardens would be to impressed.... There always camping out rate where we get off the lake to get on the trails.
