just installed the kit on my 2014 Viper after 3 years of thinking about it. How safe is this kit? Seems a few guys have had melt downs. Did they screw with the set up or are the just not a good reliable system. Second guessing myself with all the negative chat on here.

i take it you have the "180" kit (no intercooler) as far as i see it, if your kit is set at 4.5 lbs and the afr is at 11 or less at WOT. you will be fine. most of the trouble is when the kit is pushed to 6 lbs. they run out of fuel capacity. be sure to have gauges, mostly to make sure setup is correct. enjoy the added power and have fun.

When you say the 190 kit, is it the trail kit which really is a 180 kit or the stage 1 with intercooler a 190 kit?
I was one of the first to have a melt down in late December of 13 BUT!!!! my motor was dropping cylinders from day 1. Eventually it blew at about 850 miles after several times of dropping cylinders that every one said I was imagining it. When it was installed by Hauck motorsports it was done without gauges and later I added them trying to figure out what was going on. after the gauges I found it was only set at 4.5 #'s of boost and the AFR #'s were horrible 12 ish. I conferred Matt from MPI and he told me to screw in the waste gate rod 2 turns which you can do on the stage 1 kit and add fuel to the gems. I know of several others that blew motors that 1st year all had similar set ups (stage 1).
The trail kit is pretty much fool proof and I would not worry unless you are pushing over 6#'s of boost or AFR 3#s are aver 11 at WOT. The stock fuel pump and injectors cannot supply enough fuel for that.
It has been quiet for over a full season since & I have not heard of anyone having issues. The new motor is an issue on the 16's due to new rod design failures but with the trail kit ride and enjoy.

They call it the 190 but no cooler so I assume it's 180. Which is lots for the trails I ride. I run about 5000 miles a year. I now have 10,000 miles on the sled already. I love this sled it's the best I have ever owned and I have had several new sleds over the past 5 years. I bought a Polaris switchy this year for my son to ride but I think this viper is a better sled.

You will not believe the difference but I will warn you it is addicting! I was running Polaris for 4 yrs prior and bought a 15 pro S 800 and sold it the same month I got it and bought another viper! They call it the 190 but no cooler so I assume it's 180. I just drove my 180 kit for the first time today. Wow. Your right when you say plenty for the trail.
I think if you have gauges and don't mess with anything. Your good.
Is yours the new turbo with the altitude boost controller? There's a recall.

Yes. We switched out the electric boost controller. Thanks for the heads up though.

I've put about 2000 miles on mine last year with no issues at all. I would recommend installing yourself if your capable, or at least being around a little to watch the installation - just so if something does go wrong, you have an idea where to start looking. That saved me on my first ride when I was getting some crazy 400 deg water temp reading, quickly stopped and found the wire to the thermostat had come slightly undone - If I hadn't done the install myself, I would of had no idea where to look.
You'll love the power though - stop second guessing and get it on there!

We had the opportunity to ride before the before installing the turbos and I can tell you the sleds a lot more fun with a turbo for sure. If your worried about melt downs just call MPI and ask them about that, I did and I was pleased with their honest answer and the details about why each those failures happened. WOW, I didn't figure MPI would do that but they are good guys to deal with. If your handy and like to tinker on your sled then install it yourself just like SRXracer said so you know it inside and out its not hard to install. That will save some cash to use that towards clutching and a gauge. Don't worry about the negative chat on here, this is a place where we help each other fix things or make them better so that's mostly what you read about here but there plenty of MPI guys that you never hear about because they are happy and riding with a big gin . Some of those negative chats you read have been installer error due to guys just being in rush and or just not reading the VERY detailed picture directions that MPI gives you. If you decide to install yourself I would be happy to help in anyway I can. Hey, I got a New Years resolution for you, stop second guessing yourself with negative chat on here and enjoy your seld more.... haha

My buddy owns a Yamaha dealership. I installed the kit with his help so I have a good idea how things work. This site rocks. When we finished the install I read about the bad batch of boost controllers on here. I told him about it and he looked puzzled. He call his Yamaha rep and he confirmed it. Thanks to the members on here the word got out fast. The rep was very surprised that we already knew as he had just got notice that day.

Any recent negative is really surrounding the 2016 engine issues. A couple of speed bumps in the MPI control/hardware setup, but other than that when installed properly they work just fine. I'm going another season NA and will see what next season brings.

Yes I was going to finish out this year n/a but with the lack of snow I got itchy. Lol. So two more years with this one. I am really hoping Yamaha comes out with something new. I will give the new model a year and buy one the second year.
