Got a question. I have a 2000 grizzly and I went and found another 2000 grizzly for my father. Now there is a definate differance in power between the 2. Mine revs very hard straight away and really fires out of the blocks. I've put in a head to head with my 02 660 grizz and there is very little between them both. However my fathers grizz is slow of the line but once it gets some revs under it's belt it really starts to move. It really doesn't have anything of the line. Near impossible to get the rear wheels spinning from a stand still where as mine will sit there and spin all day. I'm wondering if Yamaha bought them out with 2 different diff ratio's (although I'd be very surprised if they did). I just can't figure it out. The only difference between the 2 is I'm running 25x12x12 on the rear and my fathers has 25x10x12. Any idea's out there???
My first thought is that the drive belt in your father's machine is worn more than yours. That would cause the machine to start out in a higher gear ratio as the clutch has to close farther to grab the belt. The fact that your father's machine starts to move out after it gets going also indicates the same.
That just where I'd look, others may have some different info.

I would also take the clutch apart and look for dirt/mud and then regrease the clutch with Yamaha Grizzly grease. If the rollers have mud in them then they can't expand and give you full power. Start with the easy stuff first like a spark plug, dirty fuel filter if it has one? worn belt, clutch and then valves. See if there is any difference each step of the way? If you are unfamiliar with the bike and don't know what it has been through or how it was maintained then change all your oils (diffs and engine) and oil filter. Make sure you keep a close eye on what comes out your diffs? Could be watery/dirty etc? If that is the case, then flush with diesel fuel and a cheap gear oil a few times then replace with a good synthetic (Amsoil, Mobil-1, Royal purple) Good luck......Irv

I would do as suggested above. The one with the 10in tires should really roll them over easy. If you don't ride in a lot of water a few 1in holes in the lid (away from the filter) will help them both.

I just thought of some thing else to check! Check out your spark arrestor, i have heard of them being clogged pretty bad depending on the milage and if the quad runs rich. I don't know if there is a particular time to check it or not? Anybody know at what time/mileage it is recommended to check/clean it?........Irv

I never had any problems with my 00 Griz. I don't think carbon will build up much on a 4 stroke. I usually rode mine very hard with lots of high RPM's and the exhaust was just fine.

Just a quick update. Pulled the v-belt out and it was brand new. Went further and whoever had reassembled the clutch hadn't bothered to regrease the rollers!! Plus the rollers were not in their groves, just floating around. Regreased, realigned everything and presto, full power from take of.
Glad to hear you got it back up to speed.
Reminds me that I need to spend some quality time with my clutches before winter comes and Mr. Sled gets me all distracted with snowmobiles.
