I posted this in the Munising Roll-call thread but thought maybe it needed it's own thread:
PLEASE NOTE: Any TY members that will already be in Munising before
Thursday morning and actually care about the grooming (or lack thereof) in
this area....there is to be a meeting on Thursday morning Jan 29th at 9:30
A.M. at the American Legion hall right on M-28 in Munising involving
officials from MSA, MI DNR, and others about the future of grooming in the
Munising area trails. It's my understanding that this meeting is to get
direct feedback from the people that actually use the local trail system.
Any interested parties that are available to attend are invited to do so.
If you need directions to the Legion: go west on M-28 through downtown
Munising; approximately 2 full blocks past the traffic light the Legion
hall will be on your right (the side of the road toward the lake).

Arrived at 8pm in Munising and people thought I was crazy to be suiting up to go out on the trails. There were 4-5 foot moguls and the trails were supposedly horrible. Left Comfort Inn, just left the gas station and not even 2 minutes I was behind the groomer. Didn't want to wait so my son and I took the snowbanks on the side of FFH13 to get to trail 8. Perfect blanket!
Time for some speed runs!!!!
Met the 2nd groomer just before Buckhorn where we stopped to eat. Place was full and everyone was saying how horrible the trails were and how they were not wanting to go back to Munising. They all asked where I came from cuz they overheard the speeds we were doing. I told them I just came from Munising on fresh blanket and the groomer will be here in 2 minutes. They all laughed and said "yeah, right....these trails haven't been groomed in days!" When the groomer pulled in.....the place became empty very quick....LOL
One thing I do want to say is that I heard the groomer driver was "having a few" by some in the bar. He pulled in just a couple minutes after we did. I did not witness this...but I for sure can tell you that while my son and I were there with Buddah to eat, that groomer was still there running when my son and I went back to Munising.

They are allowed to stop for a bite to eat........cocktails, not so much........
On a more serious note..........There will be some news in short order regarding the grooming situation, or lack thereof...........

Thank you for your email expressing your concerns about the Munising area trail system. While I cannot answer all of your questions I will try. First off we absolutely do value snowmobiling dollars and realize that we a s a community need them in the winter for our businesses to not only survive but also to thrive. The specific things we are doing to alleviate the problem was to fire the head of grooming as of yesterday we then will be replacing the current contractor with a new contractor as of the beginning of next season as we are too far into this season to have a lapse in grooming. I will be handling all of the grooming management for the rest of the year and we will be looking into the next year at what the program is going to look like in the future. So to answer your question what we are we doing? We are completely redoing the whole program from the ground up. We will be working directly with several other grant sponsors who surround us to help us create a new program. We have new equipment coming and are renting a Duby drag out for the remainder of the season. As for the rumors you may have heard I can tell you one thing the contract is and always has been awarded in a open meeting with all the members votes so not sure what you heard but as far as that goes most likely not true. The program is audited by the DNR and there has never been anything "fishy" about it. Poorly ran yes I agree but fishy no. I can't say anymore but that I am working on it and working with the various local businesses and the MSA and the DNR to fix it and it won't be easy. I will be forming an snowmobile advisory committee this spring to advise our group on the perspective of the actual sledder on the trails. If you are interested in participating let me know and you can be included with any actual suggestions for improving things from this point forward. We cannot fix what happened yesterday or last month or last year but we will be working on it going forward. I hope people understand this is a whole new process for us and we are going to do our best to make it work.

Look like Seney will take some of the trails. http://www.msasnow.org/trail-reports/seney-snowmobile-association/
Here is what Munising is saying on the same site. http://www.msasnow.org/trail-reports/munising-visitors-bureau/
Looks like Munising is keeping 54 miles around town.

Curious how the grooming situation has played out since this meeting??
You're familiar with the phrase night & day?..........Within a week after the meeting (and a couple other things that happened) the grooming coordinator for the Visitor's Bureau had been summarily dismissed along with the grooming sub-contractor.........the president of the Visitor's Bureau and Ben Cooper from The Buckhorn are now watching over grooming operations on a temporary basis...........the grooming contractor agreed to run the rest of February while other things were put in place.........they also got a new Dubie drag which makes a WORLD of difference..........And the total miles grooming was reduced by about 30 so they can keep up with it now.
Basically the trails have been the best I've EVER seen them and I've lived here over 13 yrs now........except for last Saturday they were a tad on the rough side......but in their defense there was an entire BOATLOAD of freaking sleds running everywhere up here.........as soon as all the sleds cleared out the trails were perfect again........i.e. today.............

A few things:
It is ok for the operators to eat. They are no different than you & I.
Following a groomer is not indicative of good grooming, or of a good grooming schedule.
It only says you are behind a groomer. (It will tell you about the groomer operators skill if you know what to look for.)
A good schedule will groom BEFORE the trails are totally trashed! (If possible)
The problems in Munising PRIOR to now is that they felt substituting constant excuses worked instead of ON TRAIL RESULTS!
Things in Munising ARE very different & radically improved now.
Here is my latest Trail Report from last weekend.
Munising Trail Report.
Sun 3-1-15.
Traffic Medium to Light.
Afternoon and Early evening.
Rode 419S, 8 West to Gwinn, returned on same trails.
(Saturday we rode most all of Munisings trail system.
(With the exception of 422), with the same results, pristine trails!)
The first thing noticed this week again, was that welcoming feeling of having the trail groomed to ur hotel.
This started the ride with the feeling that it would be a great ride, and it was!
All trails ridden were very well groomed and maintained.
VERY IMPRESSIVE AGAIN!! : )
The grooming skills being demonstrated are very good!
Trails were in great shape and very enjoyable, grooming schedule is about perfect!!
Again, Munising should be very proud of the current results on the trail!
(Funny, the Munising trails and grooming are so good right now, am running out of positive descriptive words for it without repeating! lol.
Good problem to have.)

Can tell you this, have been reporting on trails for 4 years now & Munisings trails have always been easy to write a detailed report because there were SO many grooming caused issues and/or failures!
The grooming in Munising is so frigging good now that the reports are getting MUCH tougher to write!
It really is funny.
How many times and ways can you say the trails are perfect!?!
They really are that good right now.
It is truly amazing!
They could literally use Munising as a GREAT example of how to groom properly, they have taken every suggestion over the last few weeks and used them to improve.
They improved to the point that I'm not sure there IS much else they could improve on at this time!
That does NOT mean that they couldn't backslide, grooming is much like being a rockstar, you are only as good as your last groom.
They are being well watched for backslides, however I am hopeful that this will not be an issue at all.
Right now you can't ride better!

Amazing...
Now if we can get Seney to keep their s*** running.......8 east of Miner's Castle trail was pretty much a washboard........going west once you pass 422 (Miner's Castle trail) it's pick your speed and go for it...........

Yes, however even that is good now.
The Seney groomer that was down is now up and running.
Can't really blame Seney, they are/were only stretched because they are helping Munising.
