My pilot jets were plugged with carb inlet screens removed.

My sled was running erratically the other day so I pulled the carbs and did a not so thorough cleaning of the jets. Two of my pilot jets we completely clogged. This is with only 300 miles since I removed the carb inlet filter screen. I knew it would require a little more attention and carb cleaning but 300 miles is not nearly the duration I was hoping for from this inexpensive go fast mod.
I elected to go ahead an reinstall my screens. You never know where I might be the next time it acts up (climbing a mountain) so I though it might be best. I thought I should pass this on to others who have also removed these screens. PB

is that so !!!!!

so what happends when your filters get that dirty and then what. ??????
maby you need to run better gas and also get a better inline filter ..
i have over 800 kms on my rx1 now since i did it and i have yet to have a dirty jet or any kind ... some time to save 2 cents at the pumps is not realy worth it... chow

That is exactly what 2 of the mechanics I talked to said would happen. I should have listened to them. The also said the surface area the screens have would be more than adiquate to handle the amount of fuel that goes through them. I removed the screens and will be putting them back in soon. Only problem is I cannot find one. OOOPS

I think the screens can be removed as long as external in-line filters get installed.Hard to believe that there is a notable performance gain to be had by removing the screens.I removed mine only because I didn't want the carbs getting plugged would rather plug an external filter easier to see and service ... just my 2cents

Filters?

I noticed that my pilots get plugged with goop , not particles. I wonder if a filter makes much difference. The pilots are so small, it doesn't take much accumulation to fill them.

Contrary to popular belief, higher octane gas is NOT of higher *quality*. They don't filter it any more than the lower. All it is is harder to burn.

BTW: it may be different when not in the boonies like you, but 89 is 10c/L more than 87, 91 is 10c/L more than 89. That means that on a tank of gas it costs $4 more for 89 or $8 more for 91, and this expense comes with NO benefit unless you're modified.

Maybe the mountain guys last season (with the original float bowls) could have used the extra fuel but other than that I think I'll fly mine as equipped from now on.
I still like the idea of a couple clear inline filters though. I will add that to my ever growing list. PB

i know .. i was saying just cause 1 guy is selling at 68 cents and the other 71 cent for regular fuel ,, 99% of the guy go to the cheeper guy ..
i dont not ever run supper in my sleds . you get more power out of regular then supper ...

How do you guys feel about the speed in which gas turns into green carb gunk?

I have always used premium fuel in my two strokes...and every year when I take my carbs apart....they are perfect.

Other sleds that I have seen, have that green sludge everywhere.

Is it possilble that reg. fuel turns bad faster?

Just a thought....I have been running premium in my RX1,,,,just in case.

Please explain why Yamaha would put the screens on, if they are not needed. Wouldn't that add manufacturing cost?

What about the secondary parts that people are removing. Is Yamaha intentionally adding unneeded parts to boost their cost, and add weight?

Sortof. The lower the octane, the easier it is to ignite (ie, the lower temperature it takes). Diesel fuel is very hard to burn, if you put a match into a bucket of diesel, it will not light. It is because the higher octane fuel is harder to burn that it is used in modified engines - because it raises the compression required to cause detonation.

Well, Yamaha doesn't manufacture the carbs - they're Mikuni. See www.mikuni.com. It is in their best interests to make a product that is resiliant against contaminants - who would select a carb from a manufacturer that is known for making carbs that clog? I would NEVER use a Tillotson carb in ANYTHING because they NEVER work.

For the second question, they ARE adding parts that are technically unnecessary, however, I don't see that there are any parts that could be removed without compromising the convienence. The cup holder is pretty crappy, but it holds my keys and phone. You cant manufacture a sled without a headlight, or tailflap... you remove excess wheels and you loose your sliders fast. I suppose you can remove the foam pad from the steering bar...
