The only time you get performance gains from Higher octane fuel is if your timing is adjusted to take advantage of the fuel or your engine is built with enough compression to take advantage of the higher octane. The green gunk you mentioned maybe the MTBE additive in the fuel. Up here in Maine they used it to try and reduce emmisions it was causing alot of 2 strokes to burn down because it was leaning them out. it also was the cause of bowl sludge in alot of machines that sit for a period of time..
