MY SLED SUNK!!!!!

I was in the same sort of situation several years ago. My buddy was trying hard to convince me to drag race his piped XC700 Poo against another buddy's Storm across water . I didn't want to because I had made a promise to my wife not to run water with my son around. I had made the mistake of running water with my son as a passenger (he was 4 at the time). He thought it was cool, his mom didn't and we since divorced.

Anyway, my son was with me, my buddy is pressuring me to race his sled across this big stretch. So as peer pressure set in, I gave in. I lined up the skiis at the edge of the ice with the Storm and hammered the throttle. I won the first race. My buddy was so impressed he wanted a video of the second race. We lined up again, the XC wheelied up on the water and went down like a torpedo. I dog paddled as fast as I could and all I remembered was seeing my son standing on shore watching me and thinking "how the hell am I going to get out of this one?

It was a cold cold day, I was 14 miles up the lake from the trucks. We had to steal a boat from a camp to fish the sled out and I almost died (figure of speech) of hypothermia. When I got to my truck, I wasn't able to drive home.

So, when I got home, I got a major blast from the bitch for breaking my promise. To top it all off, I got a $400 repair bill from my buddy because he said it was my fault. Yes, I was driving, I didn't want to do it in the first place and he was too chicken. I paid him just to keep the peace.

Bottom line, my 4 year old son (who is now 13) thought it was really cool!

Thanks for the story. Painful. We had a 4-H meeting last nite and my friend's kids and wife were at it. His kids witnessed the whole sinking and the wife apparently doesn't know a thing about it. I didn't bring it up. Your son was too young to keep a secret.

I changed the chaincase oil (1in high and white) and ran it again. Runs pretty strong, but I don't know if it's my imagination cause I'm looking for something, but it still burbles a little, sometimes, hitting it hard out of the hole. It used to wind up perfectly. My son's and a few of our other rx1's sometimes burble a bit, but mine was clean. Going to disconnect and dry connectors, take apart chaincase and dry it out (still a little milky), heat up the garage and cook it out. Heading accross the mountains today so I'm going to look for a 10mm adapter for my compression tester.

I remember reading an interview with Jimmy Blaze where he said he flipped his Nytro into the water all the time, practicing. He said they just cranked the water out of the cylinders, dumped water out of the airbiox, changed the oil, and did it again. Of course he probably doesn't expect to put too many miles on that sled, and has many more when it craps out.

Personally, I think your engine is ok. Your biggest concern is your seat, electronics and bearings (jackshaft, skid, chaincase). Your crank bearings should be okay since you changed the oil and went for a ride.

A guy I was with last spring sunk his RX in 25 feet of water. He had it wide open even when it went under. I didn't hear of any engine damage after that. The thing was extremely impressive on water(most impressive I have seen), but he just pushed and pushed and he finally went down.

Once you ride it for a while, any internal moisture that would cause a burble will/should burn off.

I would be extremely pissed at your friend. Even if he made it across. I assume you put in a lot of your time into his sled and he doesn't even have the decency to take his own to skip across the water. Oh well, what happened has happened. It is a very difficult situation when he is your friend and I am sure he feels terrible.

I paid my buddy to shut him up. I offered to pay for any damage and at the time he said not to worry about it. When I heard he was whining to the others, I went over and gave him 4 bills. Other than breaking a promise, was I in the wrong in the first place for sinking and having to pay? I paid, it's over.

Your friend should at least kiss your #*$&@.

Might make sense to carry a few Paxil around with you just in case someone tries a stunt like that again. Just to take the edge off your agression while you're choking him afterwards.

no worries

sorry to hear it but I had one running go under water now 20.000 miles later around thirty thosand miles on the mill only burns half qt of oil to a thosand miles and it started that at 10.000 miles If they run you will be ok what a night mare man have a great winter I would be having a long talk with my friend about buying the sled out right if he has that kind of money most lame people dont have it and do something like that irondog out

I was at the sinking and one of the fathers of the snowmobile group thought that it would be funny to tell my mom about the incident. sadly my mother found out and i was getting questioned the very next secod about what happened on sunday. I think if my dad would have had more speed he would of made but he did this awesome wheelie on the water before he went done. :o|

Speaking of sunken sleds....5 of them sunk this crazy weekend. A huge pile of us were doing radar runs and water cross way up the lake. Out of all the machines that were running water only two sunk.

At the end of the day, one guy pulls up to the boat launch, leaves his sled (07 Attak GT) on the ice to go get his truck and trailer. He comes back and there was the machine...GONE! It went down in about 10ft of water. A girl shows up on a ZRT 800, stops, and sploosh...into the lake she goes.

Two other machines fell through the ice up the lake the same way. I spent Sunday fishing out an F7 from a boat in 20ft of water. Good thing we had an aqua view camera. We had to tow it 20 miles down the lake back to the trucks.

Several machines blew up that weekend too. The carnage was crazy!
