The apex has two drain points for changing the oil, the 12mm drian bolt on the bottom of the oil tank and a allen drain bolt on the very bottom of the engine located under the belly pan cover. If I remember by draining both and changing to a new filter it takes 3.2 qts. this is how I change my oil. Like mentioned above I put in 2 1/2+ qts then start for a minute the top off to spec. The apex and vector have the inspection plug on top the cylinder to check for oil flow to the top end........I have never used it though. I would think it would be more likely to be used upon a first start-up after a major engine rebuild to check for oil pump function.Irv said:Test Pilot said:Do you guys add all the new oil in through the oil tank? I never have based on what I learned here.
One time, following the recommendation/procedure in my Service manual, I only added half, or maybe even less than half (can't remember what it reads?) and was no happy with the noise I heard.
I shut the sled off immediately and added at least another 1/2 liter which definitely quieted it down.
From that point on, I added at least 2 if not 2-1/2 directly to the tank and have never had a problem doing it that way.
I also raise the front of my Vector in the air with a floor jack and it's surprising the extra amount of oil I get out doing that.
Keep in mind, my drain and filter are directly below the engine under the plastic cover, not just the drain like it is on an Apex.

Yes, forgot to mention the drain on the oil tank as well, which I obviously utilize during my oil change.
When I mentioned about raising the front of the sled up, the extra oil I get is from the engine drain hole and the oil tank drain hole.
Not sure if anymore flows out the filter area, but with these 2 areas alone, I get an extra 1/4 litre+ of used dirty oil out.

Yes add the oil to the tank. Filler plug on top of motor is to add oil to motor on a rebuild.

SRXSex said:So we drained the oil tank by pulling the bottom line off the tank. Then we restart the sled and run the oil dry and the sled shuts off from the sensor. We always refill the sled and change the filter right away and no issues. This time we let the sled sit for a couple of hours and now it seems that the sled oil pump has lost its prime. Never seen this before do you guys have any Idea how and what lines to fill to re prime the oil pump.
Really need some help here.
Wow!
Why you would pull the oil line off the bottom of the tank is beyond me. That is what the drain plug is for! Why you would run it without oil feeding the bearings is beyond me as well.
Yep sounds like you ran the pump dry of oil and the bearings without oil pressure! You have an air lock I would guess! Do you hate your motor?
Maybe following the procedure for a total engine rebuild is in order. Seems to me once you run them dry it can be a chore to get them primed again!
