8000-10,000 miles seems to be the range for the 06-10 Apex drive shafts. I had a long cold evening in January of 2012 because of one of these lol!
What seemed to be the problem with the drive shafts. I know this was a Apex but will this also effect Vectors also. Is this caused by not greasing the bearings.

Worse on higher power machines, very rare to see an Vector break one. I saw onebreakn a 2001 SRX, but all the rest were 06-08 Apex. I've changed about 5.What seemed to be the problem with the drive shafts. I know this was a Apex but will this also effect Vectors also. Is this caused by not greasing the bearings.
Yamaha's cure was to install a bearing in the cover of the chaincase along with a longer shaft, so that the pull of the chain wouldn't be creating as much stress, it would be supported on both sides of the sprocket.

The driveshaft breakage issue was caused primarily by the track tightening when the suspension was fully compressed, this created excessive strain on the drive shaft when running the track tight enough, with stock introverts, to prevent ratcheting.
If you switched to extrovert drivers you could run the track tension quite a bit looser so when the suspension compressed and tightened the track it was not creating excessive strain on the drive shaft.
I never heard of an Apex with extroverts breaking a drive shaft when running a loose track.

Respectfully disagree. I never saw any lower power sleds break one, even with tight tracks. IMO, if it was due to tight track, the shaft wouldn't always break in exactly the same place. It breaks right beside the driver closest to the chaincase, which is where the most twist is being applied. I never knew of any 06 -08 sleds with extroverts. When the went to the bearing support in the cover, they also made the shaft slightly larger around, but I don't think they needed to.

Every one is entitled to their own opinion...here's mine
Low powered early 500, 600, and 700SXs were also breaking drive shafts with the Pro Action suspensions...after installing extroverts on them and running less track tension...no more issues.
The early Apexs did not come with extroverts but we were putting extroverts on sleds in the 90s so we could run looser tracks without ratcheting, long before most people even knew they were available. A lot of riders, including myself, installed the Ski-Doo or Wahl extroverts on the early Apexs.
From my experience...a lot of the drive shaft failures were from stresses created by the compression of the Mono Shock and Pro Action suspensions, increasing track tension, and creating excessive stress on the drive shaft, this fatigued the shaft and they subsequently failed right where the shaft necks down.
Been there done that...

had to tow my brothers 01 sx500r as it broke the shaft and it was the same shaft as the srx's. his broke in the middle of one of the drivers.

So iv asked this questoon to a couple of people now and am getting conflicting answers. Opened up every 3rd hole......that was covered over.......in order to run extroverts on my new predator 136 track. How inportant is it that i now have to add clips to every hole as well? Can i run it without the clips. Will the extroverts wreck my new track if i dont.......oh ya fyi......i REALLY dont want to have to.....lol

Oh, looking for more free info are we? Lol
Can you run an opened window, clipped every third track with extrovert drivers? Yes
Will your drivers be susceptible to uneven wear as a result of the track being clipped every third hole? Yes

Im not cheap. im just not rich. Sledding and keeping an older one running takes all my extra money. so please dont think im trying to get something for nothing just tired of spending spending spending is all.
Owning a sled is like having another kid. They both can bring you great joy and satisfaction but at a cost.

removing the clipped every 3rd tracks we had on our sleds was one of the best things that happened to those sleds. yes i used them until they where scrap from shed paddles 1st but it was a glorious day when i scrapped the last one on our trail sleds. fixed a few tuning issues we where having.

like sideshow said extros are the only way to go on a older apex,i run an extremely large amount of sag on my track when its on the lift you would think the track would need tightening! less stress on driveshaft less rolling resistance and easier on sliders due to the approach angle on these
