The other day I was riding and noticed that my left hand grip has slid down maybe a half inch and wires are exposed on the underside and I believe these are attached to the element. Error code 81 was flashing soon after and i'm not sure what exactly the problem could be.
I'm not the most mechanically inclined and could use any detailed help with how to fix this problem or what the problem may be. My hand warmers do not work at all and I know code 81 means short circuit with my hand warmers, but I need a good fix.
Taking it to a dealer could be spendy but I would like to learn how to do these things on my own.

Hey boritzer I had the exact same thing happen to me just last week. What happened is that when your grip came loose it broke the windings in your warmer element and caused it to short out. If your ride is still under warrinty try goin to your dealer and talk to them about it. luckily for me I have a good realationship with my dealer and I got a set of rsi warmers through warrenty. Hope this helps and good luck

Ya my warranty expired at the beginning of decemeber unfortunately. Maybe i'll take it to a shop and get it done for a little less expensive, but anymore advice would be appreciated.

Go buy a set of RSI grips and heaters and replace them, you just cut off the old ones / rip them off, and wire in the new RSI heaters ( its 4 wires you need to solder in total so not hard) . They work well just did the phazer.

How do you go about determining if the elements are the problem? And how do you know if it's just one side or both. I know when trying to adjust the heat the switch wont work and it does nothing for the hand warmers. It will adjust the thumb warmer but not the hands.

okay just got in from looking the sled over..i noticed that the left side the white wire is basically dangling there and not connected so i'm pretty positive that it is bad. Now my question is how hard is it to replace these? what is the best way to keep the grips from sliding down once the hand warmers are fixed because the other side is doing the same thing?

The RSI kit come with grips and elements, and epoxy. You glue them on so they don't come off. Its not hard to replace them if you can solder. To put the grips on I just used electrical tape to tape the heaters on nicely then epoxy goes on then the grips, to slide the grips on i used a bit of compressed air in the end of the grip to balloon it slightly and it slid right on no fuss.

sorry to attempt to put you to work but you wouldnt happen to have a link to this kit would you? I searched rsi's site and could only find the individual pieces and not a kit. how doesnt sliding the handwarmer back on damage the element but when they slide partially off the element becomes damaged?

Oops I should have mentioned the RSI kit with everything comes right from yamaha, here is the link
http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/accessories/ ... model=2853
The reason the element is wrecked is it not supposed to come off once its on, and any major movement will tear it then its a open circuit and wont work. The elements them selves are sticky and you stick them on the bars then with electrical tape over the ends of the element (where is transitions to just metal) to make the transition from over bar to over bar+heater easier. The epoxy acts like a lube as well , but compressed air in the end of the grip is a must! If you cant blow it up a bit you will never get it on easily. I did both grips in less than 30 mins to give you an idea.

will these work as well? and with the compressed air can you just use an air compressor and hose and blow into the little hole on the end of the grips?

Yes those will work, they are the same as the one in the yammie kit, just without the grips.
The yammie kit ones are for bars with hooks, to heat the hook as well. The square ones on the RSI site are for straight bars, if you have the stock bars then you will want the heated hooks version the one that is not just a square.
Yes use the compressor and blow in the end of a grip with a blow gun, be very gentle it only takes a tiny bit of air you don't want to blow the whole time just a small shot at the beginning and they will balloon and slide right on over the elements and epoxy, it will squish some at the end of the grips as you slide but there will more than adequate to hold them on securely.

ya the site has the option for straight or curved bars and i do have the curved ones so the heater is ten dollars more. Now this may seem like a dumb question but nothing will happen if the elements are bad and i ride without the hand warmer for a few weeks until the new ones come in? So in other words it should be okay to ride with this error code blinking at me correct? Also will the error code go away when the heaters are fixed?

I rode 1400 miles last year with only the thumb working and right side, put on new ones before this year and working like a charm , so i don't see a problem. Yes once the heaters are fixed the code should auto clear itself once you restart the machine.
