Hello all, names Owen and im new to the forum. Just want to start off by saying I've learned alot in the little time that I've reading. I have a 2007 Apex RTX which I am in absolute love with. My wife complain's during the winter that i traded her in. I'm currently in Iraq and am getting ready to go and would like to stud my sled for the upcoming winter. In the reading that I have been doing some are running 1.325 all the way to 1.450. This will by my first studded sled but want to get all that torque to the ground. I ride in Alaska around town and on the trails occassionally making a trip to Summit Lake or down to Valdez. Semi-frequently cross roads and mainly would like to know if 1.450 is too much and do you really need tunnel protectors cause from what I've read its kinda 50/50. Right now I am looking to go with Mackstuds and run 144 V pattern in the middle and everyother window on the outside. Any info would help out alot. Thanks for reading!

Run 1.450 Woody's and yes you should run tunnel protectors. Just revit a 1/4" thick x 1"wide x 4 ft in length from the back to the front of the tunnel protector and you are good to go. I have run 1.325's and they just do not give enough penetration. Too much torque, which produces too much spin with 1.325's. Go with 1.450's and you will be rockin... Oh and stay away from Macstuds, they are junk. By the Woody's off ebay. They are the cheapest place to get them.
The last thing... Did you say you are leaving IRAQ? If so, that's great to hear and thanks...

I'm running 192 Woodys SS 1.450 with no tunnel protection and so far no problems. I notice a lot of guys are running without extra protection with no trouble. Go with the woodys. You won't be dissappointed. You get what you pay for. Mine hooks like a bear with the 192.

Thanks for all the advice so far. Yeah I'm leaving Iraq in just a couple weeks after being here for 13 months. Deffinetly ready to be home again...its frickin hot over here. It sounds like ill be good to go with 1.450, I did notice that you said Mackstuds are junk. Just curious if you know how well they live up to they 5 year warranty they offer. Now im more steering to Woody's Mega-Bite (thanks for the E-Bay tip) found a decent deal. Thanks again!

I've used 2 stroke pilot's (fast trac knock offs)with good success and they're priced right..
on thing to consider is not all studs are measure the same,( i.e. net measurement)...
for example, some studs have a fixed shoulder and others dont...
the net over lug penetration is what's youre looking for..

1st things 1st. I appreciate you protecting our freedom and thank you and all the military for their sacrifice.
I have a 06 Apex for my wife and have 1.325 Woody stainless steel on it. On my 07 Attak I have 1.450 Woody SS without the extra 1/4" attached to the OEM tunnel protectors and put on 2,000 miles last season without a problem. If I was still riding the Apex I probably would regret the 1.325 because that track really spins on a full throttle take-off with those. I prefer not to stud the outside of the track on either machine so maybe there is some traction to gain if you decide to stud with the 1.325. For how my wife rides there okay for now.
Good Luck and glad to here your coming home.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I used SledFreaks advice and found a deal on 144 Woody's Mega-Bites on Ebay and im pretty much sold on those. I'm also pretty much sold on the 1.450 compared to the 1.325. The Apex came with the OEM tunnel protectors so i should be all set in that deparment. I was thinking of buying the Hauck exhaust but without added protection thats out of the question now. Which I'm ok with, when comparing the 400 bucks it cost between the two I'll see a much greater performance gain from the studs than an exhaust. Thanks for all the help so far and thanks for caring about all of us over here!
Not everyone feels that way.
P.S. What are most of you guys running for carbides, and for 144 studs pattern while studding the outside of the track. I looked at Stud-Boy's "V" pattern, is there anything else out there that I would see a better performance gain out of that I don't know about. Thanks again everyone.

If want it not to dart, then get the Woody's doolies. No other pattern will work as good as far as I'm concerned. But, if you want great carving ability, then get the 8" Executive Series Carbides from Woody's, BUT, it will dart a bit, but it will corner awesome.

Owen,
I see you decided on the Woody's and it sounds like plenty of other guys have had good results with them.
For anyone else that might be looking for other options, I have had excellent results with Fast Track Top Gun II studs on many different sleds over the years. The Fast Track polymer backers are practically indestructable, lighter than aluminum, and available in many colors.
I used 144 of the 1.375" Fast Track Top Gun II in a V pattern (including the outside edges) with the round Airlite XL backers and I am very happy with the results. Only a few minor scrapes in the exhaust heat shield and after 1600 miles of hard riding on all sorts of conditions the studs & backers still look like new!
For carbides I highly recommend the Bergstrom triple points for darting control, cornering, and durability. I have a set of the 8" with shims & ski savers. They have performed excellent and have shown very little wear.

SledFreak it's funny that you mentioned the Executive Series cause I was looking at those before you mentioned it. When you say they dart a bit is it tolerable or more arm wrenching. I don't mind a little darting at all, but I would prefer not have 2 dislocated shoulders after a ride. In your experience how was the wear, and is the cornering truly as good as Woody's claims?
Thanks for all your advice,
CHEERS!!!

IMHO
save your money on dual carbide runners....no to dualies...if you must, the shaper duece are better...
save your money on an agressive single runner bar for the yam skis WITHOUT doing other mods to the ski's found on this forum..
Do get a pair of simmons with shaper bars or pilots and tune accordingly...

To add my $.02. I really like the pilots with shaper bars. If you go that route, get the 6.9 Pilots. No loss of cornering and much better off the trail.

I noticed your signature and your location. I was in 2/75 in 1990, are you currently in 3/75? I know it is off topic, but I was curious.
