Well, I am just newly registered to the RX-1M forum...because I just bought an 04 RX-1M demo sled from Yamaha Canada a couple of days ago for an absolute screamer deal. I sold the wife's MSRX and bought her this one...of course she thinks it is hers. I took the machine for a real test ride just today and it sure is a different animal from my shorty SRX and my 03 Mountain Max 700 that I use. The RXM came with a ripsaw 1.25 installed although the 2" stock track was also included (the ripsaw will only be on for the remainder of the season). The sled has reverse, a rear rack, cover, two windshields, rear heat exchanger, wide front end kit (which I am not sure if I like) and a 1000 miles. It's mint.
I know lots about SRX's, but the RX-1M is entirely new. I live in northern Ontario, so we don't have mountains, but I like to ride in deep powder, break trail to go ice fishing and hit the power lines. What mods would you you guys recommend to "hot rod" it up a little bit?? The clutching is stock (revs are about 10,800). Gearing....I am assuming it's 21/40 with reverse. Obviously this machine isn't as fast as the SRX, but I wouldn't mind knowing what mods work to wake this sled up (turbo is way out of my league!).
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

#1 Mod. = Mountain Skis.
..... after you've got the new ones installed take the old ones and throw them in the garbage...... they are that bad.

05 mountain skis, they are AWESOME. i spent 220 from the dealer for them AND the mounting kit. dont forget the mounting kit
get the stock front end on it. 38 or 39 inches is what it is. it will help you tip the sled over easier
get that 2" stock track on as soon as you can
a longer track would help it out with hillclimbing because they arent the best hillclimbers out of the box. they like to trench.
the 05 ski's are the first mod you need to do though. they help flotation and get me higher on sidehills than the stockers.
revs should be 10,300 at WOT

I just put the 05 mountain ski's on my 04 mountain and it makes a world of diff on floatation and handling.

I am planning on getting the mountain skis, but the stocker skis will suffice for this spring. I heard someone say to go to the 05 clutching spec, but I don't even know what the stock clutching is vs the 05.
So 10,300 is the peak rpm???

Or you can just do a search using mountain and mods. Lots of info out there that will help you.

Mine is stock and in the mountains I was hitting 10200 and track speed of 85 kms. I had to instll a valve to shut the coolant off to the carbs though as they were gettting to hot and causing me some grief. I also have the fuel shutoffs installed.

gearing must be 23-40
Yamaha canada spec is to install 23-40 for flatlander
The remove the 21 when they install the Reverse. Go for Ski and 2'' extension for handlebar

I have the carb heat shut-off valve already installed so that was a bonus...
I ripped down the lake this evening at 170km/hr with 2 people on it. It was revving a solid 10,800 if not more. I guess I will know what the gearing is when I install the track this fall...but if you guys say it's 23/40 flatland specs, that's good enough for me.
I will get the 2" riser for it...does it fit without re-routing cables??? I know I ran into problems with the cables when I put a 2" riser on the Mountain Max 700...stretching the oil cable open when turning.

get the 05 handlebars with the 05 cables and you will be fine. the 05 bars are 1 or 2" higher than the 04's and sell for 20 or 30 bucks at the dealer. i pushed my 04 bars forward so they are straight up and it works great. the throttle is barely further than level, but they are awesome

You need longer Cable, and if you run at 170 km/h, you definitively have the 23-40
And for the 05 bar, they are shorter than 04 and wider, but they had a 3'' riser underneith. Put a 3'' riser and a longer trothle cable from 05, pretty cheap. 50 $ can
If you do real deep powder, like 3 feet or more, 23-40 will be too high. your sled will bog

Ok...I don't want to spend any major money....so I will try a 2" riser and get a longer throttle cable. By the way a solid 180km/hr on the groomed trail this morning, couldn't hold it too long because the straight stretch was running out fast. I guess it would mean a 23/40 ratio. Since it has reverse, can l put in a 21/40?? We get 3 feet of powder here, but you have to look for it (hydrolines, swamps). The last thing I want to do is bog. I also need this machine to break trail for ice fishing.
One thing I can honestly say, the more I ride it, the more I love it!!! It was scary wierd at first (comparing it to SRX's).
I will do the research on the threads mentioned by Johnny R.

2" riser will work without installing longer cables. Just re-route them, make sure you turn the bars both ways all the way before re-installing the pad around the bars.

Put on a $19- 05 throttle cable with the 2" riser
and you never have to worry cable length.

You can easily switch to 9-tooth drivers with the 1.25" track, if you want. I'm using 24/42 gears right now and it's alot of fun. Lots of get up and go. I don't have reverse though. I'm not sure you can use a 42 lower gear.
