Hey everyone,
Just picked up a 07 Apex GT. I have rode Polaris xc 800 for years this is my first yamaha sled. This sled is amazing and I only rode it from the trailer to the garage. Im new to this site and cant believe all the info here. Aynways sled has 1000 miles on it and Im going to change the oil and filter. What oil do You recommend and I found filters on Ebay that fit the 06 are they the same? Im going to ride it once before i do any mods to see how i like it the way it is stock. Is there anything else that i need to do or check befor i ride? It has 144 studs and dual carbides. I am about 270 lbs with all my gear on so i was thinking about the rear spring and the shock. Sorry i jumped from one thing to another but i just have a lot of questions. theres lots of different oppions on here, all good though. Thanks guys for any and all advice.

Also, just read away, lot's of good info here and the guys here do help each other out. Sounds like at 270 lbs you will need the big boy spring in the rear and get the shock re valved.
First year ran my sled stock, 07ApexER and the suspension bottom out a lot. Got it re valve by Frank at Shock Tec here in Ontario and no complains now.
Everthing you wanted to know about the Apex is buried in this form just have to go searching for it.
Enjoy, Kaz

o.k this is the 3rd try to rely to your post and am ready to throw my $@%$,computer into the fire place.@$#%
I have the same sled. If i could go back 2 years and know what i know now this would be my list of things to look at and screw with.
#1 Change the rear shock spring(and do a revalve) the stock spring is for your wife and she will never ride it. I think Yamaha has houres jockys for test riders. Set the sit in on it. Swiss sledders post on frequently asked q's at top of page.
#2 I love the gytr'son the front. ride it and play with them. you will probably find it a little tippy , so lossen off the front springs so it rides a little flatter.
#3 you have studes so watch for the rear shock mount. its real close to the track and will where the shock mount off. i have know studes and in 6300mile if has buffed off 1/32 to 1/16 off the shock mount. you can get a kit for it that will prevent this. just get on your back and feel on top of the back shock mount you will know what i'm talking about.
#4 pop the speedo and secondary clucht bearing seals and clean and re-grease.Swiss sledders post on freq asked question.
#5 lossen track so the top of luges are level with the rails in between the back front idlers and the rear axle idlers. you will get over 6000miles out of your slides. they will burn like a tire fire at first then stop. this is normal.
#6 watch the front suspention bushings. Lift the front of the sled and take apart the A arms. Grease and reasaemble.
#7 Shim the skis with dullies. you will be able to ride with one hand. Swiss sledders post on freq asked q's. or burgstorms site will explain this fanomunam of darting.
#8 watch the stering pionts. they will dry out and need some lube. make turning easier. The one behind the oil tank is useualy the problem.
#Oh, big one download the manual off this site. I can;t remember the nice lad that posted it here but will bet that he will read this and repost it.
#9 Check this site every day for a year and read all the posts. you will become an expert in know time.
People on this site rock and will save you lots of $$$$ and make you love that Ape more than thanksgiving dessert.
#10 Ride it all day and try not to think about it at work. Love you wife and when she talks say yes deer even though you are thinking of your last ride on your Ape and its July at the family reunion.
Sorry i didn't take my Yamapex medication today and feel the need to ride.
Lots of luck and welcome to butter smooth power.
Cheers

I was a polaris die hard my entire life. I had 16 polaris sleds over 13 years. I ordered a new xc 700 every year from 98 to 04 and bolted on all kinds of mods and thought I loved it. Yamaha was my last choice of sleds and all my buddies used to pick on the two who rode yamis in our group all the time. Finally I got sick of rebuilding motors and working on #*$&@ all winter so I went right out and bought an 05 rx-1 after my 04 xc 700 was blown up for the 3rd time in 2 seasons.... I never looked back, I love yamaha sleds. Like any they have little things that you need to adjust and work out to your riding style but thats with any sled on the market. Its a little heavier than the xc but the midrange torque is amazing. You'll love it, I guarantee it....

I had a 2000 xc 700 nearly trouble free for 10,000 miles but i had a lot of bolt on stuff and it would always run different from day to day also very bad on gas.
The yamaha viper was a huge eye opener for me but it did get it stolen into year # 2
I did have 2 ZR 900's a 03 and a 04 they had better skids in the rear than the viper but were nothing but stinky ticking time bombs !
I did think about a BRP 1200 for this season but since brp has had so many problems with motors & belts blowing up on the two stroke side i said to myself it would be better to see how the 1200 fair after another year or two.
Cant go wrong with the yamaha !

Also came off of a POO 700---Never looked back!!! Three things that are the best on these sleds: POWER, POWER, POWER!! Ohh and realiability!! with this sled I don't worry about if I am gunna make it back home when I set out on a 150 mile ride. The suspension is not yamha's strong point but with a little setup time it will be good.(coming off of Polaris skids make you spoiled!!) Ride it, trust it and it will put the biggest smile on your face every time you think about it!!!

KISS for starters then ride & see what you think. Buddy just came over from Poo now has 2 Yams for wife & himself & luvs them. Yam gas & go sleds not like Poo recall after recall problem after problem. You will wonder why you didn' buy Yam sooner. - 2007 Attak - LOVE my sled!!!
I love the reliability of my sled!
Engine doesn't go BOOM!
Get the factory filter or a NAPA Gold filter.
There is a BIG difference in filter quality from one brand to another.
Fram being one of the worst.
Fram makes their filters out of cardboard, try soaking cardboard in oil & see how long it lasts.
You don't want that in your engine...
There is tons of info here & the guys will help alot.
Most likely, you will love your sled!

Read your manual, Oil filter doesn't need to be change for 12k Miles...
and watch those studs touching the exhaust system.
Good luck & Welcome to this site!

Here is 14 year converted Poo rider, had the same xc800 handgranade as you, to meltdowns in three weeks was the deal breaker, not to mention previous sleds that did not finish the trip across the lake! I bought the 06 er in march of 06 and have not looked back. Shock revalve clutch kit and Rocks warmer fix with 07 bars. 10,000 miles with common repairs as posted on this site with original track. They don't go BOOM! Can't wait for snow.shanksyamaha said:I was a polaris die hard my entire life. I had 16 polaris sleds over 13 years.
