Dropped an 06' Apex off at the dealer today to get the driveshaft replaced since it had about 7000 miles on it and we are going on a 2 week trip in Feb. I did all the other preseason stuff to it but didn't have time to tear into the chainscase before the trip. I asked them to go ahead and change the pto side jackshaft bearing while they were in there since its the only sealed bearing in the sled that I didn't replace this preseason. They called me today and said that the jackshaft looked 'burnt' and they wanted to replace that too. I don't think the bearing failed since I grease it every year, but does it sound right to have to replace a jackshaft as well?

I told them to go ahead and do it, but it sounds sketchy. I'm sure they'll be happy to charge me list price for everything too...

What??? Burnt? Because it sits under the exhaust pipes. Get the old one back and clean it real good and look for any any marks in on it.

don't sound right to me,

only way i can see it burnt is where the jack shaft goes through the bearing, on the 06 and believe 07 there is a collar that goes through the bearing (over jack shaft) and a nut on the other side to screw onto the collar, basically to hold the inner race of bearing tighg to the jack shaft, if that nut was loose off off the jackshaft could spin inside of that causing heat and probably a blue burnt looking spot, if it got that hot it may be weak there, would be nice to see a pic to know how bad of shape it is, i just did that bearing, nut and collar and was about 200 bucks canadien just parts, and i think those jackshafts are close to 300 cdn! pretty pricy !

Pictures of the jackshaft and what they ended up replacing is below. Pretty ridiculous for a sled that was brought in for preventative maintainance. The best part is they replaced the drive shaft bearing that I just replaced 3 weeks ago, even after I told them that it was brand new. Almost $1700 even with the parts at "cost". Guess I know why sites like this exist when dealers can charge whatever they want. Should have done it myself but didn't I have never torn into a chainscase with reverse and didn't want to try it a week before a trip.

Hell with that, I would of drove to Eau Claire and spend a couple hours on it and fix it for you for that price. UNREAL.

Bowtie:
Can't open your dropbox but I have NEVER heard of a jackshaft buggering up unless someone spun a bearing, and if it did, you would have noticed some vibration or otherwise.
Even so, would have been interesting to measure this so-called "burnt" section if it was in the area of the bearing journal to see if it had worn significantly or not. The tapered secondary bearing journal should tolerate a slightly under size shaft. Would have asked for an estimate before they started any work, seems they got a little silly with an open work order.
No offense, but sorry to say, you got hooped by the dealer on this one.
