I don't have an answer for you but I can say this.......I've had HID in my last 3 sleds and the Ski-Doo's that run around here with the accessory LED light pkg are SERIOUSLY bright..........don't know how they'll be for illuminating trail(s) though..........

Try You tube . Look up LED vs. HID. I know a while ago I found a good comparison and the for light down the trail the HID won. There might be better bulbs out for the LED's now . They seem to change every other week.

Have you seen the Aux light bar on the Ski Doo's ? A buddy of mine runs a XRS with this installed and OMG you turn it on and it lights up the trail from side to side for about 50 yards much better than the standard headlight beam. When he turns it off it's like what happened. I enjoy following him because the trail in front of him is lit for 50 ft on each side of his sled.
Yup LED is a better light for close. Very white and makes view crystal clear. Good with snowdust also. For distance at speed HID cant be beat till they go to Projector style light. Even at 55mph at night the deer scare me.

The strip at the top of the headlight is strictly for looks. It lights up when the key is on or sled is running. There are LED low beam and high beam headlights that come on when the engine is running that are separate from the strip. I have seen these headlights on at night and they are incredibly bright. I can't see why anyone would need more light. On te SW it looks like a led stripe !

i ride LED bulbs and accessory lights on both my sleds and they are really good, did not compare with HID side by side but now you can have narrow beam's that light up 750 metres ahead with LED, and most high end cars have them now, so i don't think it will be a problem..

Current high-end LED technology is incredibly bright and surpasses HID at a much lower power consumption level. I honestly don't know what level they are using in the sleds but just saying the potential is there. I can't think they would use the brightest LED tech though as it would likely blind any on-comers.
