Hello everyone. I just picked up a 2003 RX-1 mountain demo unit with reverse, plastic skis and all the recall stuff. I wanted a sled that is fast on the trails and is ok in the powder. I'm not a real big fan of the massive hill climbs. I have a bit of a disadvantage because I havn't rode it yet. A few people say rx-ton etc. I personally don't care as long as it is realiable, fun and doesn't get stuck the first site of powder, like people say. When I hear 4 guys are needed to get it unstuck it worries me. Anyway I bought it and I guss time will tell. The part beside the belt makes a bit of noise when it turns, is that normal?

Forget about the weight just ride it and enjoy the best. You should not get in much trouble in powder, I ride seismic cut lines up here and have never got stuck on the flat regardless of depth of fresh powder stay on the throttle and blast through it.

Congrats!! on the Mtn... I would say don't worry about getting stuck it has good floatation in the powder not the best but good, if you do dig a trench take your time and it won't be bad to get out that 151'' track works!! It will be great on the trails you will be amazed with the traction and brakes on the trail. I wouldn' t trade mine for the world..... ok that's a little strong... I might go for one of the Islands ..... any way

i mostly flatland ride mine, but do get into the hills and a few feet of powder maybe 25% of the time. Its real tippy in the corners. I dropped the front and back end preload as low as i could and it made a big difference, but i have the straight rate springs and 13mm sway bar (or 12mm if they don't make a 13 for the mountain?...web site wasn't too specific?)coming from pioneer perf. It takes a lot to fight it when sidehilling at times. Even so i love it...would never go back to my old 98 700 yammie!

As all have said the RX-1 mtn does good in the powder. It doesn't take four guys to get unstuck if you know how to get out. The best thing to get is a small avalanche shovel. They do wonders for getting un-stuck. This picture was in 36" of fresh powder on about another 30" of base. It took me and one guy 10 minutes to get me out with the shovel shown in the snow.

You will love this sled. Some help that has been mention plenty of times on this post is to put Simmons skis on. This does help a lot in the powder and with sidehilling. Your noise from the clutch is from the belt being too high in the secondary. You need to take some of the washers out of the 2nd clutch so the belt rides lower.

When aligning the secondary make sure you leave at least one washer in there or replace that collar with the 04 locking version I took all mine out to get it perfect alignment wise, and it caused the notch in the collar to eat into my secondary if it's rubbing you will notice gouges on the last washer on the shaft. Yamaha has different thicknesses for this application mine only had one to take out
The locking collar is the better option

You will be blown back by the power this machine has. But it is heavy and it therefore can go downward in the snow super quickly. I agree with a shovel, as we didn't have any the first few times out and kicking snow out from where it needs to go is not fun. I have also loaded a big old rope to hookup the thing with and pull with the other sleds once stuck. We have stuck these sleds sometimes 6 or 7 times a day in the mountains and areas where the trees are tight and it gets like work. So here are a couple of words of advice:
A) get the suspension set up correctly. If you trail ride mostly and run the powder only occasionally, then you will leave more weight on the front skiis. On the other hand, if you run the fields and flats in snow that covers the pines, then you want the front skiis as light as a feather, and you should be able to actually gas the machine and have the skiis lift right off the ground. This keeps the sled going on top and not thru the snow. Also be sure to loosen the limiter straps all the way out so that the track can lift the sled off the skiis. Get an old tape about the proaction suspension and see how this is all done. Once you see the demo tape and experience the differences, you will think you are riding a different sled.
B) Never get stuck with the bow pointing up. In otherwords if it looks like you are going to stick it, turn the sled down hill asap. If you stop it with the nose pointing up, get off and start shoveling.
C) Once you learn to use the weight to your advantage, MOMENTUM is your friend. You can go thru stuff that other sleds simply ride over. Learn the sled first and try things in a controlled environment, close to home if you get it stuck, or with lots of help to get it unstuck if you stick it.
Doing these things will make you feel invincable, but of course that only works til you get it so stuck that you will wish it was spring.
It is an awsome sled, but it takes some time to learn it. There is nothing like it out there. Oh, and you won't smell like an oil can after a days ride either.

i have an 04 mountain. its a really great sled. My only problem is the deep deep powder. im talking like 5 feet of fresh powder. I couldnt top 17mph in that stuff. you willl notice the sled is front heavy when you go WOT off the line, and the track just spins in the snow.
im thinking about adjusting the straps under the track to get more floataion on powder. i ride trails TO the powder, then its powder all day, then back to the trail to get home

first ride
Ok I finally rode the rx-1 for the first time. It was fast, however I could not appreciate the handling, the engine brake or the skis. I was bucked off doing at least 70km. I found it very hard to control due to the ski width and the front end weight.

i had the same probs with mine when i bought it this past spring, but with the mods i've done its actually rideable now...way stiffer in the front...no longer tippy (dumped it a few times for no real reason when i first got it as it was real top heavy and would dive horribly when turning or letting off the gas). Removed 35-40 pounds so far...now i love it and wouldn't go back to my 700 yammie with tripple pipes...bone stock it just sucked balls
