NEW Slider Wear Theory

Hyfax has always worn alot faster then the other sleds, at least until they are about 3/4 used up. Then they should be good for awhile. I always figure that 3/4 of the useable hyfax will be gone after 300-400 miles, then I usually get about 1,500 miles out of the last 1/4 of the hyfax. Been that way since the late 70's with any Yamaha model.

When the 2nd model of the old Phazer turned up..it ate slides.

My buddies milled tthe hyfax down so the wheels worked..solved problem.

here's my theory, the wheels are too small - solution polaris wheels - fixed the problem on my phazer, i have 1400 miles on my hyfax and i'm not even close to changing them.

ok so lets see...yamahas eat slider or hyfax will you.....and the other brands eat ummm...pistons? i think i will add some wheels to fix the problem with my yami and maybe they should try adding some tuning forks to there cowl! see keep bitchin about yamaha and there poor hyfax wear and those guys will keep bitchin about there damn engines blowing every year...seems like i chose the right brand!

At least 8000 KM's on Dad's 06 Vector GT (mono) and we left them on for more. We just changed the track out to an ice ripper so we'll have to keep an eye on them until it's done stretching. OEM Ripsaw was closed every third. I usually run his track as loose as I can without ratcheting.

So what's wrong in trying to get a good product to be even better? And since you're on the subject of bitchin, how about the sloppy steering? Or starters that fall apart? Or relays that can't take a bit of moisture? Or wheels that we can't replace bearings? Or headlights that can't be aimed between the lows and highs? Or crappy stock skis? Or hand warmers that are mediocre at best? Or reverse that won't engage unless we jump up and down? Sure the engines last forever. Too bad we can't go anywhere with them or keep from spending oodles of money for aftermarket parts and fixes for Yamaha's inability to address them. This is the same as other makes by getting better pistons in the aftermarket.

BUT, they did fix some issues, such as the starters and replaceable bearings on later models. I believe that Yamaha does read what goes on here and the direct feedback from their customers.

So chill. It's not bitchin. It's called constructive criticism.

I'll bet on one thing, Mooseman has got to have the same model as me, lol. Or he stold my sled?

I had problems with hyfax wearing out. But hey I'm fat! Weight on hyfax makes heat! Heat melts hyfax. I'm talking paper thin not a few mm left!

For my pro action I added Polaris wheels after I first tried SLP slid savers on that stock every third window closed track. The SLPs helped but the wheels made a huge difference. Slides started to last 1500 miles till worn out. Before that 500 miles was more the norm. I've always used the 10mm wrench as a guide to hyfax wear since my Cat days.

My 98 Pantera went through hyfax like my Warrior. Burnt em right to the rails. My 2000 Pantera had no problems at all. 5000 miles on the hyfax and I changed then because of the mileage but they didn't really need to be changed for a couple more thousand.

My ZX2 ate the hyfax off to the rails in 900 miles. One bagger trip of 5 days 900 miles and I could see through the hyfax it was that thin. One more day and I would have wrecked a 2,000 dollar skid. Front of the skid was fine just between the back axle and the idler wheels. Its a extended to 136 ZX2 and that just opened up the distance enough I guess to let the weight of my fat arse burn off the Hyfax.

Solution! I narrowed a Idler axle shaft down about 5\8 to 3\4 of an inch on each side redrilled the bolt holes in deeper and installed 7 inch Yamaha wheels on it. Hyfax looks evenly worn front to back now. Id say problem is solved!

Now some people might be changing their hyfax to soon but I know I was not one of them. I blame my Incredible Bulk and pressure on the handlebar flipper (speed makes heat). Strangely however my 2000 Pantera did not even with my portly well rounded girth have a problem with hyfax wear. So design does play a large part as well!

I'm maybe 140#'s with gear so my issue isn't weight. I do for sure I know I ride faster than most so that is probably a bigger cause of my wear. Although I have Yamaha idlers (the updated ones like on a 2010+), I moved the mounts down a couple mm so 'effectively' I'm running a slightly larger diameter wheel. This mod at least leveled out the wear instead of the wear pattern being all wavy where certain points wore faster/more than others. I'm still killing them up by the front bend though.

@ Mooseman...im just saying that people refer to us yamaha guys as ( hows your hyfax ) and we refer to them as how many times did you sled blow last year! ...i was not bitchin bro. Merry christmas to all!

Ya, i know what you mean wcfpusher, my buds ask me if i started drinking again->DARTING, lol. As i sit on my lazy butt, turn the key, press a button, back up, and i'm off, while they're pre-mixing, power-valve cleaning, blowin their backs out un-loading, changing plugs, adding oil, and getting that "black streak" on their right bicep from the recoil rope from pulling a zillion times!

I have Doo wheels on my sled and I ride in no snow to low snow conditions all of the time and my sliders last 3000 miles easily. I have 6100 miles on my sled and changed the hyfax out at 3200 miles even though they were still good. Last year I rode through rocks and sand, bare roads, and ice trails with virtually no snow at all in the UP (low snow El Nino conditions) and my sliders still have a lot of meat left in them. Not sure why some wear out so quickly, but I'm just using Yamaha sliders purchased from Port.

People need to not panic when the slides wear fast the first few hundred miles. I know it's disturbing when they wear that fast so soon. Buts it's like the others have said, they wear quick then stop. I change my hyfax once a season and it's not always in great snow conditions. Usually about 4000 miles a season.
