Starter is probably turning backwards, by the sound of things. My dealer didn't notice that either the first time around.

That would make sense.Do you know if there are any index marks to line up?I think I will take mine off and Loctite the bolts for good measure.

It didn't happen again after the numerous failed attempts on Saturday. That afternoon and Sunday it started as normal, one crank with no issue. It's a POS and will be going into the dealer later this week, I refuse to turn the wrench on this anymore.
On the reverse isthatahemi, what is the fix...the forks?

It could just be a bad connection. My - batt cable came loose.I cleaned it added a star washer and Loctited it.

Well I dropped the the old starter off at the repair shop to see if they can fix it. When he tried putting power to it at first the thing was a dead short and just sparked like crazy and didn't move. So I think my dealer may have been feeding me a line of BS about getting the thing to spin but not fast enough to turn the motor over. (especially given Isthatahemi's comment about the one way clutch in the motor not needing speed to engage) I'll find out tomorrow if the starter repair shop was able to fix the thing and get it to work right. I'll let you guys know.

The armature is moving around in relation to the brushes, all starters are back-ordered. Line the parts up, peen them, epoxy them, Loctite the through bolts, and wait till March 20th. (Warranty should pay for both).
I had the secondary shimmed, and the reverse dogs in the gearbox replaced. I still had to do the shut down, re-start and hokey pokey to get it off my truck saturday, I give up.

Thanks for the info, I'll be sure to print it out for my dealer drop off. Not sure what I'm going to do, but I'm not selling and taking a further hit. If Yamaha doesn't want to co-operate and finally step up, I'll talk with my lawyer and see what can be done.

Forgot to mention I did the ski shim mod prior to this weekends riding. Wow, worth the time and effort IMO. The sled turned on a dime and darting was much reduced...
BTW my FX has started in much colder temperatures prior also...
