I was riding tonight and I noticed a noise only noticable at idle..almost sounds like an exhaust leak but it has a rattling noise associated with it, like on metal..I know its hard to imagine what i'm saying here..I'm just wondering how common it is for the exhaust donuts to go on these becuase thats what it sounds like(possibly)..the sled only has 1500 mi but I have changed the silencer..maybe thats it but it sounds like its farther up front..could it be ice build up pushing on the pipe? No diffrence in power and I can't hear it under a load...only at idle do I head the rattle at towards the top front of the tunnel..any ideas?

It could be the exhaust gaskets or it could be the bracket riveted to the heat shield beneath the seat. The bracket supports the front of the muffler. When the rivets come loose the thing will buzz at idle and early into the throttle. To check this, just pull the seat and see if you can wiggle any of the rivets in a 3-rivet cluster on each side of the shield.

If this isn’t the problem, keep pulling off parts until you get to the exhaust gaskets.

That sounds about right..i'll check that tomorrow..I just got off the sled and thought i'd see if anyone has noticed a similar prob. before I get out and tear it apart tom...its more noticable from the right side of the sled (right sitting on the sled) seemed like it was close to the top and front of the tunnel..thanks for the support ..love the backup from the site! Radian guy-its not the clutch rattle i'm sure of that i'm used to that as with the other 4 yami's i've owned..but thanks for the input!

before you take it apart go buy some exhaust donuts/gaskets.....you'll need them, it sound's like you do already.....if the sound is in front of tunnel or under the fuel tank then its most likely donuts 100%.

I'm on my 3rd set already.....grind the clamp a little and get a bit more pinch on the packing.

I'd be surprised if it's the donuts after only 1500m but maybe! My first set went at around 2200m. I was going to suggest the clutch also but sounds like you know that sound well.

my donuts were gone after 3000kms which is around 1800 mi, if you can spin the clamps by hand I bet the donuts are gone, maybe the source of the rattle is the clamps

I'm not to familiar with this sled yet, any other sled i've owned been able to tear it down to the ground and back. Now these donuts are accessable when you take the seat/gas tank off? How much are the gaskets? It does sound like a clamp but i'm going out to work on it here in a bit..

donuts are cheapish....clamps loose tension and rattle when donut breaks down, they eventually gets sucked thru the exhaust.....or summin......mine had nothing left the first time i changed them, no signs of anything LOL !

pull seat, tank and heat sheild.....2 beers max.

under the gas tank there is a heat shield, remove that and you will see the header attached to the manifold flex joints, yes you need to remove the seat, tank and plastics to gain access, takes less than an hour...cant remember the cost, but if i recall they were $3-5 each.
you will have to loosen your header and exhaust off a bit I think to get the new donuts on ( pull the 2 rubber plugs off the top of the tunnel under them is a 6mm allen head screw which were super tight on mine)

haha perfect ;)!

my guess would be clutch rattle pretty common. exhaust gaskets will usually give you some backfire sounds on let off too just another way to tell.

I'm positive its not the clutch rattle..two diffrent sounds..and yes the sled does pop etc. when you let off the throttle..sounds like clamps to me..the shop is warming up i'll let you guys know what I find :)

k guys so the clamps are loose on there and I can see parts of the donut laying around but I ran into a problem...tried screw loose, heated up the pipe etc. stripped the damn head on the allen bolt...whats next?bottle torch and vise grips?
