Nytro compared to Phazer

I am pretty committed to owning a yamaha, and currently have a few. The one I ride is a phazer MTX and I really like the sled, low end power is good. I am at the point I need to buy another sled and have been looking at a phazer 4 stroke for my son. I have thought about giving him my MTX and purchasing a Nytro XTX.
I thought I saw online that the phazer is tipping the scales at 515 and the nytro is around 545. That is getting on the heavy side as I am not as young as I was and we do some off trail, and I don't want to be digging out all the time.

So that being said, what kind of comparison is the XTX to my phazer MTX? I know the Nytro is more expensive, but how does it ride compared to the Phazer? I don't really need lots of speed(I had an SRX and a piped 700 previously when I was younger)

Off trail a nytro was so much more power than you phaser they will be about the same 2 in track vs 1.25. Phasers are super cheap so if you like it then stay with it but if you want a more thrilling ride buy a nytro

I agree on the cheapness of the phazer, that is part of the issue, I can find phazer's for $3k all day long. Nytro's about twice as much.

If you're not looking for more power and you are happy with the way the phazer rides , stick with the phazer. The nytro is a great ride but does feel heavier and takes a bit more effort to flick around.

We now have two phazer mtx's. One stocker and knew turbo. Both are so much fun to ride although the extra power,of the turbo makes that sled an absolute blast. I'm actually considering one for myself and getting out of my turbo apex. I had a na nytro for a season and didn't get much time on it due to poor snow conditions that year and then I totaled it in Cooke Memorial Day weekend that year so I only had about 60 miles on it but I didn't care for it. That's how I ended up with my current apex. So given the choice between the nytro and the phazer I'd go with the phazer.

Have had both phasers & nytros ... 3 phasers MTX's (one with timbersled rear suspension), an FX and a RTX ... 2 Nytro FX's stretched to 144".

Nytro motor is a blast - and very dependable but the Nytro chassis off trail is noticeably heavier in the front end than the phasers - likely due to the fact that the phazer spindles were close to 3" further forward of the primary clutch compared with the nytro. There is a $hitload of aftermarket A-arm geometry available to try to remedy the issues with the nytro front end. We considered swapping out the front ends on our nytros but IMHO the cost benefit was not there - sled would still be heavy but slightly better handling but it's not a cheap fix (still had to deal with crappy boards, and other issues). We originally purchased the nytros because we though that they would be like a phazer on steroids - not so!

If you only ride trails / very limited off trail then there are loads of cheap original / limited mod late model year nytros available which would be fine - $3500 for phasers and $500o for nytros seems usual . However, if you like to ride off trail you will be sorry unless you get a tricked out nytro ($7500 with a +3" or more front end, lightweight exhaust, air boards or similar, steering post relocate, lightweight rear skid, lightweight battery, rad delete, etc. - mods & upgrades cost more than the sled in many cases) and even then they are still heavy and hard to handle in most conditions - OK for those running in pure powder with widely spaced trees or open fields. Loads of nytros dumped past two years for Vipers or 2 strokes.


We sold the nytro's in the fall and picked up a pair of 13 holdover 155" pro rmk 600's - night and day difference in handling compared to both phasers & nytros. Very happy so far but we do not ride groomed trails! We still have the 5 phasers - will probably ditch the RTX in favour of a 2 up seat machine for next season though. Personally, I think that a supercharged phazer motor in the pro chassis would be killer for ditch banging and low altitude riding .... maybe Yamaha will offer a high strung 2 cylinder 4 stroke to the other OEM's.

We don't have time for much in the way of traveling to snow with kids in activities. However this year we have been able to ride from our driveway this year.

So I really hate to get a boatload of cash tied up into sleds again. I suppose if I could find a high mileage sled that needed a motor rebuild it might be an option.

I have no experience with the phaser but I ride with a buddy that has a nytro xtx and as long as he has snow under the track( not ice) he can go anywhere. I find the same with my rx1 with the 1.75 back country 136". And we ride off trail about 80 percent of the time.

If you don't want to spend a lot and are fine with the power then then a cheap phazer may be the way to go. You don't want to get a high mile sled or one with a blown motor in a 4 stroke. 4 stroke is way more $ to rebuild and in most cases the wear items - bearings, shocks, ball joints, are toast. We picked up 3 year old phazers with under 500 km for less than $4000 cdn and if you buy over the summer you should get that to $3500 or less.

Yes thanks, both of the 500's that I picked up are under 3000 miles.

What does one consider high mileage for these 500's?
I mean the first filter change is at like 12K isn't it?

well i went from 2 phazers to 2 nytros this season. Phazer is a great sled, real quick to about 70mph, tops out about low to mid 80's maybe see 90mph on a good day..phazer loves to be ridden hard, takes alot of rider input to get it to rail corners, so its not for the lazy trail cruzer looking for a plush ride. With a set of skid and a 1.5 freeride track it is a riot off trail even in the 121" configuration, very flickable and get up on plan quick..but the stock track must go, horrible off trail and not very good on trail either.. the phazer shines in ditch bang'n, beat up trails, and the twisties where your running mid range speeds the big boys will have trouble keeping up with you.. in the fields, straights, and lakes not so much fun..lol

Nytro is just faster, a rocket compared to the phazer. nytro just pulls right up thru 90mph no problem. off trail my 121" is a turd compared to my 121" phazer. The phazer just gets up ontop the snow so quick.

I ride about 80% trails 20% off trail so the nyrto has more of a fun factor for me than the phazer did..But that 20% off trail fun i am missing has been bugging me all winter.. so I will be looking for a phazer during the off season..definitely keeping the nytros, but i plan to have a phazer in the garage to play in the ditches..

change the oil every year, the filter every year but some guys go 2 seasons on the filter.. dont go 12k on the filter..and if you get the phazer put a k &n oil filter on it.. there is a nut welded to the end of the filter makes it nice and easy to get off..the filter isnt in the best spot.. the part # is kn147.
