Yeah, probably a dumb question, but I'm pretty dumb on 4-stroke tech. I'll find out at the dealer on Saturday, but I would like to know before then. I'm hearing some rumbling that you can run 87 octane in these 4-stroke Yammie's? I assume there is no performance benefit to running premium? This does make a difference to me in the grand scheme of the decision. (To four stroke, or not to four stroke)

I run 87 all day long with no problems...

Sometimes, just for giggles I'll do a 50/50 tank of regular and ethanol-free premium to offset the ethanol level in regular.
Not great sentence structure, but I think you'll get the point.
Seems to make difference and will help a little bit with MPGs. Yamaha does suggest using fuel with no more than 10% ethanol. In Minnesota I think the law now requires 15% ethanol in regular.
Either way, apart from the ethanol content there is no performance gain to be had using regular over premium.

Yamaha says to use 87 octane pump gas! That's what it has been calibrated for from factory! I checked into this before I got mine. Not that is was a deal breaker for me if I had to run premium but this is just so much easier. Especially on a long trail ride, you're not always hunting for premium fuel!

We're not new to four stroke but we are new to ethanol. I see our pumps are just now listed as 10% what are some of the effects of this stuff in our fuel systems? What are some of the do's and don'ts? I really can't see useing our food chain as gasoline suppliment.
I guess we are just isolated in Montana.

I picked up my XTX on Tuesday and the technician at the dealership told me to use Supreme. I found this strange. I'm planning on just using regular gas. Why waste money on expensive gas for little to no gains.

Hey Roddy,
This is probably not as applicable to you guys where you have a higher population base, but a mechanic friend of mine said that Premium gas where we live is not purchased very much so it sits in the tanks much longer and likely loses a few octane anyway. Not to mention the higher chance of water in the gas.
Regular all the way for me. Ran regular in the Firekit for 2 years and in the Nytro all last year...No issues

I broke mine in with Premium just so the cylinders would run a tad cooler during break in.....after 300 miles I will switch to Regualar

Interesting approach.....I think I would want as much pressure on the rings as I can get for the break in period so the rings seat quickly and completely. Cooler temps mean less actual "burning" of fuel, meaning less combustion and therefore less pressure on the rings. To each his own, but I think it's a waste of $$. Run it on what it's desinged and tuned for, anything less and you'll get detonation, anything more and you'll have powerloss and a waste of money.

preimum did'nt run as good in my sled, it's like it gave it a miss, so just stick with the 87O

Last year when the FX Nytro was introduced, the representative for Yamaha on the online video said this sled runs best on good ol regular pump gas. Been doing this with mine since day one and it ran perfect all year, 3300 kms
