2008 nytro rtx
hey i just purchased a 2008 nytro rtx a few weeks ago and am now hearing about the overheating issues with them. i riding mainly trails. i got aftermarket exhaust, ulmer clutch kit, 1.5 not studded camoplast and the tunnel closure kit by the exhaust. im not running turbo or supercharger.
is it really that bad?
what is the best fix?
yamaha said mix the coolant 1part water and 2part coolant, could that an issue?

Some had more issues than others. These sleds have inadequate air flow around the engine and undersized coolant capacity. My 2008 consistently ran hot although it never actually overheated. The coolant should be mixed to the proper freeze protection for your area. A 50/50 blend protects down to -34 F and is normally adequate for most areas. I tried additives like Water Wetter which did absolutely nothing to help the condition. There are a couple of things that are proven to help . I added the Yamaha mountain tunnel exchanger which completely cured the hot condition. Others have found that adding hood vents helps reduce the heat that builds under the hood. There are aftermarket exchangers and vent kits available. Mountaintech sells an instrument panel vent and tunnel exchanger that will reduce the heat problem.

how hard was it to put the nytro mountain tunnel exchanger? what other parts are needed for that? and how was the coolant hoses routed?
was this exchanger in addition to the one that rite behind the motor in front of the tunnel? does this go in the same place?

Only took a few hours to install the exchanger. Other than routing a couple of hoses it's not a bad job. The Nytro chassis has knockouts in the bulkhead to route the hoses to the tunnel cooler. You need to remove the seat to access them and install the new hoses. Everything you need comes with the Yamaha kit. I believe Moutaintech's kit also comes with everything needed to do the install.

I added a Mo Flow vent kit on the dash and that helps more air into the cowl so the rad doesn't boil sitting right on top of the engine.

As far as overheating goes, mine only overheated in very icy conditions. Everyone else in the group that was unstudded overheated as well though, z1 turbo and cat 500 sno pro. Studs help a lot in these conditions. Not saying a extra tunnel mounted heat exchanger wouldn't help, but in my snow conditions overheating is not an issue.

I had some overheating issues running on hard pack later in the season. There was some thawing and then a hard freeze which made more ice than snow on the trails. I added Mo-Flow vents in the console and at the bottom of the side panels. Hopefully this helps. I have been told by some that the "scratchers" mounted on the rails also help with overheating.

if i add just the vent under the dash will that do the trick? cause by the time you start throwing to many vents i could about buy the heat exchanger.

I added the console vent and two curved vents on the bottom, so I have about $100 tied up in venting. I also am interested in the heat exchanger, but I want to see if these vents make a difference. I just got them this summer so I havent tried them out yet.

does mountaintech make an exchanger kit for the xtx?

The tunnel heat exchanger will fit all Nytro models and years. I skipped the vents and installed the exchanger back in 2009 and haven't had a problem since so I personally would spend a little more and do it right. The only vent that I'd consider adding is Mountaintech's instrument panel vent which will allow heat to escape when the sled is idling with no air flow.

I have a Mo-Flow console vent which is similar to the mountaintech vent.

My 08 nytro overheated pretty often. I installed dura flex ice scratchers and it never overheated again. Give them a try before digging into the extra coolers.

I run duraflex ice scratchers and they held keep the sled cool and i also get 3,000 miles out of a set of slides.
They are nice bc you can backup without ruining them

I used to run 87 reg. gas and it would overheat all the time. Stared running 93 prem. now, no more over heating.
