It seems to me that the speedometer should be capable of calibration. The odometer reads accurately with my GPS, therefore grinding teeth off of the shaft to improve speedo error is going to throw the odometer off. This stuff isn't rocket science. Yamaha has to have done this to give a better feel of the pants for speed. It's not just a top end error, it's off from start to finish.

Whats the point of this thread??

we have know about this since day one! yamaha did it on purpose.. to make some morons think there sleds actually go 130+mph.. and sell more sleds

My point is many of the 4strkrs are grinding off teeth, that's permanent, was in hopes by now that someone had found away to calibrate the speedo. Sorry if that is offensive to you.

I know it sucks that the season is over, but lets keep cool everyone.

IASledder, the only fix that has been discussed on the site is grinding off one of the teeth. I don't think Yamaha views it as a problem that their speedo is off by so much, but it did become more accurate on the 06 models. Still not as accurate as the other 3 manufacturers.

The gear cost less than $20. and takes about 1 min. to change. 8)

That's true, but the odmeter will be incorrct with teeth removed. On the other hand if the speedo were recalibrated, this might also effect the odo? Don't know if the two features inside the speedo are individual or tied together.

I have heard that speedo is close til you get over the 60-70pmh mark then goes off the higher you go. I think top is off ~15mph. 133=118 radar, 135=120radar...
as long as lower speeds are correct(for speed limit purposes), does it really make a difference if it's off graually as you climb over 55mph???

It should not be off this far? I still think they could make it alot closer than it is. If shitty CAT can do it, then Yamaha can surely fix it.

its not off only on top..its off all the way...

I tested it with GPS,15mph high on average thru entire range up to 115(radar)....

We all ground off 2 teeth and its EXACTLY perfect now with GPS....i mean its dead nuts on!....

the 06 is same as earlier yrs....it needs 2 teeth take off and its so nice now to radar, and watch speedo, and no before hand what the gun read,so now when im riding and hit a nice stretch and if i hit 120,mph on speedo,i know its right on!...

the BONUS is your odometer is now LOW!...;)....approx 15miles per 100.

Can someone explain this a little better? Ground 2 teeth off what? if you grind teeth off a gear... don't that cause it to skip?

Excuse my ignorance... someone fill me in.

are you sure dan? when i ran top speed through the gun it was off 15mph, then i was radared when i came back to check my speed and the guy holding the gun was clocking me just for fun. he said i was going 45 and that is VERY close to what my speedo said. speedo can't be off 15mph ALL the way up through or my speedo would have read 60.

If you read the latest AmSnow, pg 9, they did a test and the speedo was off at top and midrange, ie @ 50 sled radar was 44, 117 sled radar was 104.7

When you grind off 2 teeth do you do them 180* apart or side by side?
Did you do a GPS for the odo? It would have to be at least a 10 mile run. Just curious. I prefer accuracy to odo over speedo.

The gear teeth are used on the speedo sensor just below your secondary clutch. The teeth don't mesh with anything, the sensor is just sensing the teeth as they go by, if you grind off a couple of teeth (I did mine opposite of each other) the sensor will be missing a couple of counts per revolution, bringing the speedo more in line with your actual speed.

Thank you sir... all makes sense now. Not sure if I'd prefer accuracy with the Odo or the Speedo.

Guess I'll wait till it comes in...and ride it first!!
