my son is buying a new vector or apex next season, and we are trying to decide how to get some weight off of the front, have any of you thought or done this. my thought was to build a u shaped oil tank that the battery could fit inside the u and mount it on the rear of the tunnel, aluminum oil lines under the seat, and a single aluminum wire also under the seat for power, and ground to tunnel. any thoughts you guys that have torn them down, is it possible, is there room, from what i have read it would lighten up the nose about 10 to 15 pounds.

Well, you could but you are talking about two critical components that would be susceptible to a lot of vibration. If either of them goes out you could have an electrical fire or lose all of your oil. I wouldn't do it.

However, you can buy a light weight batter (like the powersonic 1270) and relocate it into the bulkhead in the nose. This drops almost 10 lbs and moves the weight lower and has very short direct cables.

Good luck.

Moving weight from front to back is the same as robbing peter to pay paul. Front end lighter turns easier, nice. But rear end heavier to get unstuck, bad. Longer battery cable more resistance, less efficiency, same is true with longer oil lines. I have not seen under the hood of a 06 but on the 03-05 you can take out tool kit, change carb filter syst. and install after market light weight battery and save a lot more weight then you are talking about moving to the rear. If you replace the battery move it to the nose of the sled and take out the old batt. bracket it is heavy. This will make it much faster to change oil filter in the future. In the future when you sell the sled any new buyers will appreciate these improvements, I don't think they would like the battery/oil tank idea.

It's a Vector so it will probably handle pretty good out-of-the-box, No? What's 10lbs if that's all you plan on shaving? I'd take reliability over that anyday.

Vector oil filter is at back of motor, access through plate. Nowhere near battery. Put a smaller battery in, lose 5 or 6lbs minimum. It really isn't as big an issue on the Vector, handles well.

how about a little more help. on the main classifieds page where it lists yamaha, polaris, skidoo, and cat. there is an add for 1994 v max parts, made by 98srx, this classified will not let me contact him, or post to contact him, it says you are not logged in or may not have privalige to access this info. i need some parts. is there a way that any of you know of. thanks

Don't put any extra weight in the back, I lightened my RX1 rear end up a lot and thought about the battery relocate.
But it is so nice to have the rear light I would never ad anything back there now. Lets face it that is where you lift it 9 out of 10 times.
On a lot of the 4 stoke bikes they remove the oil-tank and convert to just oil in the sump (oil pan), anyone ever think of that , would be great to make some room for supercharger applications.

I believe that the RX1 motor originally was a wet sump and Yamaha spent a lot of money to convert the RX motorcycle engine to dry sump so it would sit lower in sled and crank over in the cold easier. I could be wrong about this but I don't think so.

sounds like a lot of work...to lose bout 15lbs off the front...just buy a light weight battery and hit the gym

My thoughts exactly. Some of these riders are so consumed by how much they need to lighten up their sleds. One thing they forget is how to lighten up themselves. ;)!

My old riding pal Del told me it would take 2 weeks to loose 10 pounds on him, or a phone call and a evening in the garage to loose it on the sled.
And we even have a case of beer while messing with the sled without feeling guilty.
By the way his old 2000 rmk weight in at 440 pounds dry ( on our aircraft scales) at just around 200HP it is hard to beat when it runs well.
But usually blows up at least 2 times a season. :moon:
