First got my sled done the proper break in and all that stuff went to the dealer to get the service done on the sled ya know the normal stuff.
Picks sled but next day goes for a spin and i kept getting an oil light that would come on and off . I did what anyone would do check the oil , it was full keep going same thing oil light comin on and goin off .
I put the sled in my garage takes off the side panel figured maybe they had my oil senser left on the ground and dirt got in it or something so cleaned it out checked the oil level again once again full.
Next day after work takes the sled out gets about two kms of the house and the damn thing shuts off with the oil light on . checked oil once again fine . heads back to the house sled shuttin off every min or so with oil light on, gets back to the house calls my dealer to pick the sled up the next day to have it looked at.
So the next day the dealer picks up the sled carts it over to the shop i get off work just as they are hauling the skid plate off the sled and the min the mechanic hauled it off oil pouring down everywhere after it was in my garage the night before and never dripped a drop on my garage floor.
But anyway i later found out the shop had a junior mechanic do the service on the sled and when he took the oil filter off the engine the o ring on the filter stuck on the motor and he slapped another oil filter )with another o ring) on the machine finished the service and sent her out the door. so anyway we took the oil filter off took off the o ring that was causin the problem no harm done right WRONG.
I get off work the next day with the intention of going to the cottage and get about 10 kms up the trail and start getting like a valve knock so i wasnt far from the dealer i slow down and try to inch her to the shop and BANG sled shuts off and i curse and swear knowing full well what that sound meant.
I have a smoke take off the hood and see a huge hole in the crankcase and a connecting rod looking at me. anyway tows the sled to the shop and they right away know it was there fault and get on the horn to yamaha and get me a motor flown in the next week. Just i warning if you get a intermittent oil light don't kid yourself into thinkin it just air or something stupid i would say this will happen to you. apparently it is common for the o ring to stuck onto the engine when the oil filter is removed just a word to the wise

At least it was the dealer who messed up, and you get a free motor. Still sucks, though.

And this is a great example of why I do my own maintenance. That really sucks for you, I would be freakin pissed The sad thing is that it's just common sense to make sure the old o-ring comes off. Anyone who has ever done their own vehicle oil change checks. Gives you real confidence in the people they hire.

there is even a paragraph in the owners and service manual to double check that oring before installing the new filter. there have been several here that have had the sticking oring on the oil pick up. my sled stuck, my wifes didnt but that is how you catch things, doing your own maintainence and being observant.
sux it happend, at least the dealer and yamaha stepped up and replaced the motor asap. ski
