Oil Change Short Cut

Spoke with a fellow Phazer owner tonight. He has two of them and he says all he does for the oil change is pump the old oil out of the silver canister and replace it with new oil. He measures what he took out and replaces it with the same amount.

He has only changed the filter once after the 500 mile break in. He had the dealer do that one while they did the 500 mile check over. He was told that since the sled is not run in a dusty environment that the filter really does not need to be changed each season. Once every 5000 miles will do.

Anybody else doing this? Seems like an easier way to replace the oil.

I understood there were 2 drain plugs, one in the canister and one in the block.

Definitely easier ... the lazy mans oil change!

I would not advise to go this route, especially for the first oil change after break in, although I know MNUser's post states the dealer did change it.

Yes Ruckus, you're right on the 2 drain plugs. I even removed the oil cooler for the extra 2 or 3 ounces of oil in that area. Actually, I had to remove it to get a wrench around the filter. SOB of an area to get bloody knuckles.

By the way ... I have the service manual. It lists a part number for the oil filter wrench. I asked my dealer to check out the price for the wrench and they told me that they cannot order it ... no listing on the system for it.
Go figure ... an odd size filter that Yamaha won't even provide a wrench to the customers for purchase.

Way to keep the Yamaha faithful happy!!! ..... NOT!!!

Next filter will be a K & N.

Yea. That is what I thought too. But, lets say they are. He said he gets about 3 quarts out by sucking it out. Then replaces the old oil with new stuff. Would it hurt to mix a little old with the new? Just wondering????

Yes is is called a evacuator they do work okay but it is only a few bolts to get access to the oil drain. And there is a drain on the bottom of the engine block. Granted it only holds about a cup of oil in the sump but why not take the little extra time to insure you are getting ALL the old oil out from the system....it is not like you have to do it three or four time a season....unless you get to put on WAY more miles than I do.....in which case I am Jelous lol.

It is a 65 mm wrench you need. If you have a dealer that deals with Motovan the part # is 315-1324 the olny down side to this wrench is it is a little too deep thus you will have to go but a cheap ratchet and grind some off in order to fit it in.

I will check into this. My Yamaha dealer is also a Motovan dealer.

I would look into getting a KN oil filter. It has a nut welded on the end making it easier to get the filter off.

You coud use some channel lock pliers on it.
