My 03 rx1 is running great with plenty of power but it seems to use a bit of oil. It drops from F to E on the dipstick in about 300 miles of hard agressive riding. I know from other posts on this site that the 03's used a bit of oil and that to reduce oil consumption I will have to rebuild at least the top end. That is not going to happen any time soon. I will keep adding oil and drive it till the engine is done and buy a used one and continue driving. I can see black spots (assuming it is oil)on the snow after it is warmed up from starting it from cold. I am just curious as to what is concidered heavy oil consumpion for these sleds. It has 13,000 miles of hard driving so I would think that it should burn some oil. I guess there is a bright side to this. It will always have fresh oil in it.
Would a top end rebuild fix this problem or should I just drive it and add oil.
I am not overly concerned about it because the sled runs great with lots off power but I am just wondering how long these engines will usualy run using oil like this.

They'll run forever. But if you want to decrease the consumption go to your dealer and get a product called ring free. Do the shock treatment then change the oil.

What does the ring free do to help lower the oil consumption. Is it a yamaha product.

The oil rings on the pre-05 engines gum up and don't expand to seal the oil from entering the combustion chamber. Ring free de-gums the rings. I don't recall who makes it for Yamaha but it is made to Yamaha specs. After the shock treatment you can use a little in every tank of fuel to help eliminate the buildup.stomper said:What does the ring free do to help lower the oil consumption. Is it a yamaha product.

sound like it could be worth a try, thanks.+ Can it be used in other engines also, like quads boats and vehicles

Yes, yamaha recommends it in just about everything

Personally I would just ride it and have some fun and add the oil. What you are seeing in the snow is soot build up on start up mine does the same thing and it does not use any oil.

Mine burns about the same in 200 miles. The ring free does slow it down a bit but the best thing i found is yamaha combustion cleaner in a spray can.Spray it into the engine while running, run it for 10 miles, then change the oil. This will buy you 200 miles before it starts to burn oil again. One more thing, the oil burners are faster than the non-oil burners(beat an 06 apex on top end last week)

I had a 03 RX-1 that used oil from the time I bought it till the time I sold it . 15,000 miles later and it still runs great , I sold it to a friend and he loves it . As long as you understand that it uses oil and make sure it always has oil in it she will run along time . One of my riding buddies had a silver polaris and he would park behind my RX-1 for the night and when we would start up the sleds in the morning the RX-1 would spit black soot all over his nice pretty silver polaris , all I could do was laugh.

If thats all that I will get out of it if I use this stuff, there isn't much use using it. I may as well just keep adding oil and driving. I just thought that there might be some miricle stuff that would help. I still might give the ring free a try just to see what happens. If it works, great, if not oh well, at least I know.
Are you using synthetic oil? If that was my sled I would run dino oil simply because it will not have the time to deteriorate. Maybe try adding a heavier oil just to see how if consumption goes up or down. But ride that girl. lol

I am using amsoil 0w40 synthetic. What is dino oil?
If the oil consuption isn't going to hurt the sled and it will run like this for a long time I will just keep adding and driving.

Regular oil is dinosaur oil. I am saying that because every 300 miles you are going to be adding brand new oil to the sytem. Other than the easier starting you get from synthetic you dont really need to be running synthetic for that reason alone. One thing to remember also is its a dry sump meaning when you crank it over to start the crank is not being driven through the oil like a wet oil system. With the dry sump system you will get better starting and better fuel economy for that reason alone. One thing about using dino oil is that its not going to start moving as quick as synthetic on really cold starts. They make high mileage dino oil now to help with oil consumption maybe try adding some of that and see what happens. I would start with a 10W30 and see what happens it certainly wont hurt to try and see if you can get that consumption down and if not just ride it and add the oil.
