oil consumption

hey everybody is anybody know the exact cause of the rx-1 oil consumption i mean everybody on this forum talk about carbon built up around the piston rings but in my mind an excessive oil consumption is due by engine wear. i got a '04 with 9000miles on it and it started using oil 2000 miles ago and now i burn about 1 quart every 1000 miles. i know that everybody says to use seafoam but does anybody has replace their piston rings and what they look like. i plan to keep my sled for the next season should i consider replace the rings or should i buy a rs witch seem to last longer without burning any oil

i forgot to mentionned that i use motul 5100 10w40 as i use in my fz1 motorcycle who by the way does'nt burned any oil after 12000 miles

There have been many many discussions about the cause of oil consumption. It is belived by most on this site that the cause is carbon or residue from the combustion process which causes the rings to stick inside the ring lands on the pistons. In my opinion there is no way these engines are using oil due to the excessive wear on the cylinder or the rings. I believe the oil consumption is due to the buildup of residue on the rings and piston. The Yamaha personal watercraft has shown the exAct same problem. The solution seems to be a shock treatment of seafoam or preferably Yamaha's ring free product followed by using low octane gas with a treatment of seafoam or ring free. RX-1's from 2003, 2004 and 2005 are showingthe same type of oil comsumption even though the spring tension of the 2005 rings are stronger.

There is no way these motors are worn out! My 03 used about 1qt in 500miles. When i had the head off the cyl walls where like BRAND NEW! You could see the X in all four holes. After some seafoam and ring free i am not useing any right now. ( i dont think)

Mine 04 always did have some carbon in the pipes. However, it just started to use a lot oil this year. I did a shock treatment of Ringfree and the oil turned black. That black was internal carbon from someplace inside the engine, probably the rings. Changed oil and now there was NO oil consumption in the last 900 miles. Oil is still so clean it is hard to tell the level on the stick. Give it a ringfree shock treatment. See what happens. I bet you'll like the result.

My own belief for the reason why the carbon and residue is building up on the rings and ring lands is that these engines just run too cold. We know there is not much timing advance and the manual specifies the coolant thermostat opens at someting like 160 degrees F. I just put a temp. gauge on mine but will not be able to ride it this year. Even though people are seeing the temp light come on, I think the sensor turns this light on at a fairly low temp.. The fact that the Yamaha watercrafts which use pretty much the same engine and the sleds both start to consume oil and the R1 bike does not indicates to me that there is a problem with the operating temp. of the sled engine. Combine this with using 93 octane gas and the residue will really build up. Too bad the dam season is so short we can't run a bunch of good tests such as advancing the ignition a few degrees, running only 87 octane gas and running a higher temp. theromstat.

Could you please describe your shock treatment with the ring-free? You are using the ring-free product from Yamaha, correct?? Thanks!!

I was using 1/2 quart of oil on each tank of gas when racing .Today I put 100 miles on the new low comp pistons and the oil did not go down .Problem slove.My stock pistons did not have any carbon at all on the rings.The oil rings would not even break when giving it a twist .The temper in the rings was all gone.

So Blue shadow you put 2004 or newer rings in?

The wiseco pistons came with the rings as a kit.Always check the rings for proper end gap.
