I am about to change the oil in my rx1 warrior and was wondering if the yahama filter wrench is really necessary? It is definelty a tight sqeeze getting in there, but wondered what some of you more experienced people had to say for advice.

I always use channel lock pliers but thats just me.
I have never had an issue getting one off like this.
I just cant justify spending the money for a specialized tool with such a limited use when i already own tools that can do the same job.
You are going to throw the filter in the trash when you get it off right? A few scrapes and possibly a dent or 2 won't bother the trash guy.

I was thinking the same thing.... I had a bad experience once with an ATV filter and it was a nightmare once it started to get mangled.

The three pronged wrench whose arms tighten while turning it works great. You just have to wiggle it onto the filter with barely enough room for the rachet, but it does work. You can get small turns in while readjusting the prongs to allow for racheting, and it will eventually loosen. I bought mine at Wally World.

thanks for the input guys, sounds like lots of options.... what I was looking to get was the cap style piece that a ratchet hooks onto and then you go from there. Yami sells it for like $12.

If it's the metal one where the 3/8" ratchet fits into the center, don't waste your $12....it won't work. There's not enough room to put a ratchet on it because the steering pivot is in the way.
If it won't come off by hand.....a screwdriver and lots of rags will do the trick.

Oil filter change

The cap style tool that Yamaha sells, if I am right, also has a nut on it, so if you can't get the rachet on, a spanner or crescent wrench can be used. This is the best tool, and you will find less greif, with itl. 12 bucks is not a fortune, when it comes to the right tool... Don

I like the cap style, but have found that my adjustable strap wrench works the best. I am not fond of the screwdriver method, and only use it as a last resort. Not only dose it make a mess, but the chance is there to force filter debris into the engine.

I ordered the filter tool that the yami tech's use from Port Yamaha. Keving was awesome in helping me locate some other items. Only cost me $11. To me it's money well spent. Give him a call if you have other needs. He was quick and knowledgable.

i made my own tool
that fits all oil fitlers

get a 5"or 6" piece of 3/8 or 1/2 square tube , steel
it must fit a 3/8 or 1/2 rachet

at one end cut a slit,
slide in a loop of strap( like a pack sack, or old seat belt)
it must have a loop big enough to fit your biggest oil filter

wrap around filter and loosen
works like a charm ;)!

I use one of these. Just keep excess oil off the strap and filter body.

I find a pair of water pump pliers works just fine. The adjustable jaw type of pliers in other words.

Yep bought one at Canadian tire for 15 bucks. Fits a 1/2 inch drive works awesome on the Yami and anything else for that matter. Most auto parts store have them.
