I am half way through my oil change when I notice the dealer gave me a the incorrect oil filter. Is it bad to leave the sled without oil until tomorrow when I can get the correct filter?

X2.... you can leave for a very long time!!! just dont turn it over!....

X3, no worries what so ever.
Just think of how many engines are built and the time it takes to build them, all with no oil in them.

I also bet, just leaving it one day that oil will still be dripping from the drain holes.

If you want to ensure you get all the old dirty oil out, raise the front of your sled up carefully with a floor jack and you'll get at least another 1/2ltr out of the filter/drain area and the tank.

There is thin layer of oil that will stay on all the parts and it will take a long long time for that to go away with only the help of gravity... Keep it kinda dust free (dont go sweping dust towards the sled) and you'll have nothing to worry about.

Like Irv said it will most likely be dripping oil from it tomorrow still!

Got it all finished up today. Can you. Elieve that the dealer gave me an Apex oil filter the first time and when I showed up today they said "it doesn't matter you can use that one". I said are you kidding me, go get me the right one. They are not even the same diameter it to mention it would be to long to put the skid plate back on. Anyway thanks for the responses.

Actually, the dealer is somewhat correct.

Yamaha has two filters, which are also shared with the R1 motorcycle.

The "old" filter, which is the one used for the Apex, is larger than the "new" filter. Yamaha reduced the size of the filter due to space constraints on the R1, and chose to use that new filter on the Nytro and Phazer.

The "old" filter is larger and arguably a better filter, if you have enough space for it.

Both filters are frequently interchanged on many, many yamaha products...see the cross reference

Phazer filter is bigger than the Apex, just put them
both on. Must be more than a few different ones.

Ahh I stand corrected. Thanks. That restores a little more faith in that dealer.

Just to clarify on the oil filters as some of the info above is only partially correct. The Nytro, Phazer, and Vectors take a 5DM-13440-00-00 style Yamaha oil filter which is definitely a different diameter and length than the Apex/RX-1 style. The 03-05 RX-1 models originally took a 5GH-13440-00-00 filter and when the Apex was released the filter changed to a 5GH-13440-20-00. The -20 designation used on the Apex is 5mm shorter in length than the original 5GH style filter used on the RX-1s. The models that use the 5GH filters can use either style 5GH (-00 or -20) as long as clearance (length) is not an issue. On the Apex/RX-1 models when using a filter wrench and rachet to remove the filter we find the 5GH-20s provide better clearance for easier removal of the filter as the rachet doesn't end up getting backed into the frame area in front of the filter.
