I have three filters on hand from my various machines, each looks to be the same diameter and thread type, with filter length being the only major difference.

The three filters are K&N KN-147, Hiflo Filtro HF204 and HF303. The KN147 is ~52mm excluding the nut, the HF204 is ~64mm measured the same way and the HF303 is ~75mm.

Has anyone experimented with either the 204 or 303 filter? I'm not sure what's to gain if anything, but would imagine the larger filter flows better and filters more efficiently.

Any thoughts?

All oil filters have a first-pass filtration percentage. Most common filters average about 20% first pass. That means 80% of the oil on first pass does not go through filter. Obviously as the oil continues to flow it all gets filtered eventually. It would be virtually impossible to find room for a filter that would be big enough to filter all oil going through the 998 engine. It would have to be probably about 8" in diameter and 6" long. Obviously not practical. So, look for a filter that has the highest first pass % AND lowest micron particle size. A larger filter theoretically should have the capacity to bypass less (have a higher first-pass %). Hopefully you can find published specs to find out.

I will see if I can speak to an engineer at Hilflo Filtro or K&N to find out. I use that 303 filter on a Polaris Sportsman 500 and the 204 is meant for a Kawasaki STX-15F PWC. I've used the 303 and 204 interchangeably before.

I was surprised to find out how small the Sidewinder filter is, and it looks like there is definitely room for a larger filter down there.

Im almost positive all of the filters you listed have the same filtration %. The only difference is that. You engine oil capacity will increase slightly. Interesting thing is that filter also fits the viper but was actually designed and only fit the 660 raptor atv
