I know lots have this same problem but I too am now an oil user , I have 2000 kms on and I am down about 1q. (1500kms since oil change/this year)

Why is this , is everyone just living with this problem.
I don't feel that I should have to add oil every 1000 miles on a new sled.

I did check it properly too , it warmed up and I did not screw in the dipstick and the sled is level.

what is excessive and what is acceptable.
What do the dealers say about this?

I just checked my oil on my Warrior and added about 6-8 ounces! It was changed 1300 miles ago at 500 miles. I also changed it at 20 miles with the filter both times.
I broke mine in hard! Now it will be interesting to know the oil usage on sleds broken in easy compared to those broken in hard

I broke mine in pretty much to the book , and still using oil.

what gives

Consider yourselves lucky. I just checked, and found that the DID do the breather hose update (I thought they would probably forget it), and I'm STILL going through 1 qt. in 400 miles or less...and its getting worse. I'm up to around 4000 miles on the sled. I have other problems though, which I'm posting elsewhere.

My dealers claims Yamaha says 1 quart per 1000 Miles. Bikes use oil, so our sleds are going to use some. Imagine a motor spinning RPMs in the 7000 Range during normal operating conditions, its going to use it boys. How nice would it have been to only go through 1 quart of oil in 1000 Miles on your old 2 stroke?...BBY

Mine started to use oil also. The breather modification is done and the hose was still plugged. Where does the oil go if the breather hose plugs?

I broke my 03 shorty in as Yami recommended and burn about 1 qt per 1000 miles. It is tolerable but I would prefer it not.

Something's wrong with mine, I've got over 4,200 miles, broke it in by the book, oil changes by the book and it hasn't used any oil.

Of course, I ride it like an old man drives a Buick Electra. That might have something to do with it too.

Poetic justice

Everyone else gets 16-18 MPG's and I only get 12. Now I seem to be using less oil than everyone else. 1350 miles none added since 500 mile change, hmmmmm

I wonder how much oil is actually in the motor and filter, that doesn't show up on the stick?

I seem to use oil like its going out of style, however I do ride hard and I tend to lean it on its left side alot while carving, so I just attribute it to that. Still kind of bothers me but the sled runs amazing so I guess I will just deal with it.

Guys...I have over 9000 Kms on my RX1 so far and I have NEVER used less or more than 1 Qt. of oil per 1000 miles. That is Yamaha spec. I broke it in close to the book for the first 100 miles and then broke her in way I ride. Never used anything other than Yamalube. My sled's motor is stock (except for green carb springs).

I have talked to a contact at Yamaha Canada about this and that's what is spec'd out for this machine and considered acceptable. If you use less...great if you use more...well then what can you do about it? Nothing.

 I had an 1990 Isuzu Impulse with a 1.4L DOHC engine that redlined at 7900 RPM. That thing used 1L (Qt.) per 1000 KMS.. Other people with the same car used different amounts.

The engine was never touched by a wrench in 300,000 Kms. Welcome to the wonderful world of hi-revving 4-stroke Japanese motors....my Honda and Nissan are very similar...they both use more oil than my Olds minivan. It's just the way they are designed.
