Opinion on Bender stage II kit for Yami RX-1

Hi. I am looking at a few used 03-04 Yamaha RX-1's with the Bender stage 2 turbo systems on them. Sleds are in the Mid-West. Both of them have less than 1700 miles on them and are priced between $5000-$5500. One owner I talked to said the only issue he has had was that the air-intake was plugging up in the tunnel area while riding in very deep powder, causing the sled to bog down if he tried to really open up the throttle. When I called Bender Racing to ask about this issue and a possible fix for the problem, they told me to stay away from their own kit, as they don't make them, or parts for them any more!!! I am pretty handy with a wrench, and can fab up my own parts if I ever need to, but this would be my first Yamaha, first 4-stroke, first turbo sled. I just sold my 2005 Mach Z with nitrous, so I am no stranger to fast sleds, and the work involved in owning them. I am just wondering if anyone who owns one of these sled can let me know what they think of them, or am I better of staying away from these and maybe going for a stock Apex in the same price range? Any useful input would be greatly appreciated!

NUGE: I'm happy with mine, and most of my problems were early on and my lack of any previous turbo knowledge.

Give Justin a call @ Full Power Performance. He worked for Bender and bought out all the rights for their turbo system. Phone# 716-699-6299

Do a search and you can read for days on the battle between front and rear mounts.

Their are still guys on here running the system on Apex's, with Justins upgrades.

Nuge,

Yeah the dinky clerks at the new Bender Racing don't deal with turbo's anymore after they had folded and sold off their Turbo division, so with a grudge they refuse to offer any support or refer any customers to their competition. That sure is putting the customer first, eh? I wouldn't even call them for oil or spark plugs, myself...

Like BigDog05 alluded to, FPP had subsequently bought up their turbo design rights and old inventory a few years ago, improved upon and added some of their own designs. It's little known that they do produce and stock replacement parts and updates, and offer full tech support for any of the old Bender style carb'd rear mounts. Worth a call...

In addition, rest assured that any of the boosted shops that are TY advertisers are capable of tuning a Bender Turbo Kit. By no means would you have trouble finding tech support!

That is a really really good deal for those sleds for what they are, you won't get that kind of power for that kind of $$$$.

Keep in perspective that any type of boosted kit (SC or Turbo, front mount or rear) from any company can suffer from snow ingestion / plugging of filters in "very deep powder", it's not just a Bender kit nuisance... That is why you'll see pics of various boosted model sleds with filters sticking way up out of the hoods, side panels, and rear, etc for deep powder mountain riding... If that is your type then you have to adapt for your type of riding, like anything else.

Great info guys! Thanks a million. I live on Lake St. Clair in Ontario, so I won't see too much deep powder anyway. 80% of my riding will be on the lake and local fields, with the occasional trip to Muskoka, Ontario or Northern Michigan trails. I REALLY want to try a boosted Yami, and this seems like the ticket! Anybody have anything to say about the "cons" of these sleds?

feed 'em good fuel, don't get greedy on the boost... cause power is very addictive! shouldn'thave a problem...

You've hooked into the right forum.
Do some research here, ask more questions, then ride it if you can.
Most "trail" Turbo sleds I've run into just aren't set it right. Boost leaks and such!
The guys here will help you through most issues.
TY is

Well... I guess that settles it. I'm going this afternoon to pick up a silver 2004 RX-1 limited edition with the Bender Stage 2 turbo system with only 1200 miles on it. Getting it for $5400... pretty good deal from what I've seen in my search for a boosted Yami. Can't wait!... Now all I need is some snow to ride the darn thing ; )

Congratulations, your about to step up into a new realm of HP. You'll be ruined forever. LOL!

AAAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!! I drive 1.5hrs to the guys house, check out the sled... It is SWEEEET!!! He goes inside to get the registration... and its in another guys name. It was never changed over from the previous owner. There was no way I was showing up at the border trying to import a sled from the US into Canada with a signed registration from one guy, and a written receipt from another. I am P.O.'d!!! oh well... the search continues. BTW... Nik/98700... I will send you details on the turbo sleds... as soon as I get the one I want first ; )
