Who has painted their (APex or any other) side panels. I am talking aboutt he plastic that is models with the color already inbedded into the plastic. I want to paint my apex nose, side panels, and belly panels blue to match the rest of the blue. Basically make it look like the SRXs and Vipers. I loved the entire blue front end with white decals/accents.
I was wondering where they got the paint to match the rest of the sled and what type of paint to adhear well to the plastic. I have access to a spray both and sprayer but need the prep and paint information. Is there a color code for Yamaha Blue?
Any information will help.
Regards,
Kyle

Well its worth the question if some found a decent paint that could be clear coated... I would most worry about flaking. Lets just see if anyone has a good idea.

An automotive paint with a higher concentration of flex agent would be optimal. Krylon is cheap, bonds well to plastic and you can't fudge it up.

I used krylon spray paint specifically designed for use on plastic on some or the smaller plastic parts on my sled. (exhaust covers)
it has held up pretty good. absolutely no peeling or chipping but it has not held its color well.
it was originally white and is now kind or an off color white. it lasted about 2 seasons. i am just going to paint them again. no biggie.

for what you want to do i would suggest talking to a body shop or professional painter. you definately need to scuff & prep the panels properly and use a flex agent with an automotive paint.

I know it's a bad word but there is a topi on dootalk about thisin the rev forum I think. Alot o people with revs wanted to make them look like the mach. I thought I remember reading it a few years ago and the parts guy at the doo store did his and it has held up for a couple years now. I would defiantly speak to a body shop as the Nytro panels seem thinner than the rev.

the best finish would come from an auto paint store just go to one tell them what you need and they will set you up. hopefully you can spray, they do have small self contained power units called prevals and a simple glass bottle under them they work ok when the power unit is new it tends to spit out moisture. other than that, krylon fusion i bought some compact fluorescent ext lts for the garage but they were white and i had clay colored siding so i kryloned them that was 8 years ago paints still there sure they faded but i can live with the amount of fade.

Ive done both my Apexs with painted side panels. They look absolutely incredible. Here my post from a few years back about whats involved and some pictures. http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php? ... ted+panels
I will also add some pics here of my 07 Apex Turbo I did up.

Interesting...
"They were prepped with adhesion promoter, urethane primer, then sanded perfectly smooth, painted black with flex agent then cleared 4 times"
Do you remember what was used as an "adhesion promoter" or what the flex agent was? I am assuming the flex agent gets added directly to the paint?
