i just replaced my speedo side bearing and speed sensor. The bearing was chewed up and actually allowed the shaft to wobble enough that the spline on end ate up the speed sensor. When I replaced it the bearing was in pieces. I loosened up set screw and pull old bearing off. There was a piece of white plastic behind bearing, which I thought was a piece of bearing. It was chewed up pretty good and about a light 1/8" in thickness. I put new bearing on and went to set screws and noticed there is about a 1/4" gap in between the new bearing and collar/ spacer. Does any one know if that's right or is number 8 on diagram the plastic piece I removed? What is number 8? It says cap on parts list

The cap is to keep out the water and salt etc. I think it is something Yamaha added later as there was none on my sled. Probabily a good idea to get a new one and grease the bearing yearly.

Ok thanks. So even with that little plastic cap piece in place, there will still be a gap in between the collar that butts up to cog wheel and my new bearing? Just looks like there should be another spacer/collar. Between 4 & 6

I believe that the cap goes in first and then the bearing up against it as you install it from the outside where the speedo pickup is located. . The cap doesn't go on the cog side of the driveshaft.
