Just picked a Phazer 07 for wife and daughter. Ran it tonight on the lake. It has not been ridden all winter since we have no snow. It started rough and ran ok but had a hard time starting once turned off. Here is what I have done tonight.

1. Pulled plugs. Will get new ones tomorrow. They were dark.

2. Poured gas from tank into truck. Will get new gas tomorrow.

3. Checked exhaust donuts and did not see any donuts. Just two allen wrench claps connecting exhaust to muffler under heat shield. Seemed tight.

4. Belt is in perfect shape.

5. All recalls done by previous owner.

6. Put battery on charger.

Anything else anybody can think of?

I did notice it needs an oil change. I will do that in a month when I put it away for summer. I did notice the steering has some play. About an inch or so. Would like to remove that. I think I can do that when I open it up and do the oil. Correct?

Can't help you on the other issues but as for the steering play, support the front of the sled and then you can manipulate the skis/spindles/handlebars/etc in different directions to locate the slop. The usual culprits would be the lower ball joints, ski spindle bushings, inner and outer tierod ends, steering pivot assembly and the steering bushing just below the handle bars. To see the inner tierod ends and steering pivot you will need to remove the airbox.
I almost forgot the infamous A-arm bushings. There has been lots written on here regarding all of the above to give you the finer points. Also, there are kits/shims/bushings made to fix most of the above issues.

If the exhaust clamps aren't loose then the donuts should still be ok, Phazers are noticeably louder than the other 4 stroke yami's

If you mean it took a couple cranks to get it running and warmed up after shutting it off, that seems to be the norm on these sleds from what i have been reading...check your idle, should be 1700 ish. some people do turn the idle down so the reverse engages better, and that would cause a hard start if they were set to around 1300-1400, thats where mine is set

I did not see any donuts when I took off the clamps. I did pull off the seat frame bolts and turned the whole muffler over to look at the underside and all seemed OK there too. I checked all the welds and it looked ok.

I did not see anything that looked like it could be replaced. I'm going over to Yamaha tonight to get plugs. I also dropped one of the tiny bolts that holds the heat shield in place....will visit with them tonight.

Found the blow out diagram. There should be two gaskets in between the headers coming off the cylinders and the flexible flanges on the exhaust pipes running to the muffler.

There were not there. Not sure where they went. Not sure if they fell apart and disappeared or if the previous owner took it apart and never put them back. They will help with the noise.

The first Phazer I ever owner was a red standard model. I was cruising across a lake and the clamps let go while riding. The Phazer was running straight pipes. LOUD! That one did not have them as well and I put it back together without them. Did not know I needed them. Poor person who bought it. I hope they ended up adding them back in.

You will want gaskets in there for sure.
