Phazer top speeds??

Fair enough. My point was more that you can you can actually get a higher top speed and acceleration while using the 18 tooth.

I actually did each mods one year apart so I know what the effects were. The clutch kit was first and had a large effect on performance. The exhaust had a minimal effect other than weight lose. The gear change from 20t to 18t was last and did not effect the top end only the acceleration.

I do not believe that a Phazer can has enough hp to take advantage of the therotical top speed the 20t could provide . It does lower the revs at trail speed and there by raise the fuel economy.

Voda love the input keep it comin. Now, I agree with the clutch kit and plan to add ulmers kit very soon. As far as the gearing, if I'm reading ur post correctly you changed gearing last and went to a 20t. (2 teeth up from were both of us are at 18) is a big change. i plan on going to a 19t gear. I agree that a 20t may be to much for the horsepower level to gain speed. And that would seem to indicate that ur mods are working. One thing I would like to know is since u gained speed with an 18t gear, u had to be turning more rpm. There is no way given a max shift out ratio in the clutches and a fixed gear ratio that u could be going faster without more rpm. I did not get a chance to see were i was at rpm wise at top speed but i can only assume that with my current combination something is keeping it from going faster. At this point i believe it is either gearing, lack of overdrive from the clutches, or some combination thereof. It seems to get to 95 mph fairly easily but no more. Also, Ulmers mod airbox does not seem to have had any effect on topend. Again, horsepower or lack thereof doesn't seem to be the determining factor for me right now.

I actually went the other way. My sled came with a 20t from the factory and I replaced it with an 18t I picked up off eBay. It was the last mod I did.

I had originally wanted a 19t but couldn't find a used one to try.

I do think I'm turning a little more rpm now but I can remember how much. I think I'm around 11,800 if I can get really hard packed snow.

As for max shift out I'm not sure if I was constantly getting that with the 20t. Perhaps the 19t would allow the max shift out while allowing as high a gear as possible.

I think Shmit Brothers will machine more over drive into the clutches but I haven't really looked into it.

Ultimately I think given that Yamaha has already squized 80hp out of 500cc there isn't (excluding forced induction) much more power to reliably get out of it. I think gearing and clutching area the only way to really change the top end or acceleration.

Sounds like a 19T gear might be worth a try. Next time I have an opportunity to top'er out I'm gonna try to get an rpm reading as well.

Yes I have seen that clutch mod that Schimdt Bros offers. The price is very reasonable. I think its $50 to machine the primary clutch and another $50 to machine the secondary helix. Gonna have to give them a call to see if the mods have to be done together to achieve full/overdrive shiftout.

Just not sure if I will do BOTH a gearing change and the clutch mod. My goal is to pick up 5 more mph "indicated" by the speedo. If it takes both mods than so be it..

As far as mods go, I agree there doesn't seem to be anything else (outside of power adders) to pick up say 5-10 more hp. I do remember awhile back there was a member that had a ported head that he planned to install at some point. I'm somewhat skeptical that the increase will be worth all the effort and expense. But, I hope that when he gets around to it he see's a nice increase and share's that info with all of us.

With a 144" freeride and 17t equivalent gearing she is good for about 83-84 indicated top speed (76-77 GPS) on hard pack trail conditions. I've seen 90. (82gps) once on a plowed ice road and that was touching the rev limiter as I had run out of clutch by 85 indicated with 17t gearing. She will cruise 60-70 all day long riding with the big boys, I did 275 miles yesterday doing just that and still averaged 18.5mpg. I'd have to say 70mph is probibly what I would consider a top cruising speed as your over half throttle holding that speed.

Real world speed with just 1 1/2" freeride track added & my bigger sized carcass, 75-80 is fast enough for me.
I'd rather bop thru the woods ahead of my friends at a decent clip on the lower end power anyways.

Completely stock engine, 2011 phazer GT, with studs, I get to 76-78 mph top speed on the speedo on a straight-away groomed trail. I also have a nytro xtx and the power difference between the two is astounding. Phazer can be a fun sled for twisty trail riding though. The seat is not too comfortable though. I'd get a vector ltx gt with EPS for your wife if she likes to hit fast speeds on straight aways...

You might want to consider a newer vector, the power steering makes the sled feel 100 pounds lighter and it will do around 100

You're right I probably should be going faster. But I weigh 280lbs and I don't have a windshield so the drag slows me down.

I didn't buy a Phazer to go fast, I bought it for the ride and the feeling of riding a bike on snow. Can't forget either that fuel economy and the lack of injector oil is enticing.

How are you getting these speeds out of the Phazer. I bought my son a 2008 GT RTX and the most I could get out of it was 70MPH. That wasnt on hard pack that was in a field with about 18" of snow and by 230lb frame on it. Going out tomorrow and I will try it on the hard pack to see. Also looking at a rail extension project for it this summer and going to 1 128" or a 136" with a 1.5" lug. Anyone do one yet that could aid in my decision?

One thing about phazer speeds is that they do seem to vary significantly. Many factors could affect the numbers being reported.

In my case, I am on a 2009 RTX short (stock) track. I weigh approx 225lbs suited up. The road I achieved these speeds on is long enough to allow me to push the sled to its max top speed. Flat, extremely hard pack bordering on ice from the many autos that drive on it and pack it down solid. My phazer reaches its top speed in a fairly short distance. I would estimate 3/8 of a mile in my case.

The sled will NOT come close to these speeds in many other conditions encountered such as powder, fields, or even hard pack on most trails were the snow tends to be a little loose.

In discussing my goals with Chris @ SBM, he feels that with my current setup that I am overreving at my "indicated" speed of 95mph and therefore on the downside of the powercurve. Chris also estimated that I am over 12,000 rpm at my current top speed. As mentioned previously, I have not had an opportunity to read the RPM during one of my runs. Chris also believes that with a machined clutch (that will allow full shift out) that I may in fact achieve my goal of 100mph indicated. Chris said he has seen 107mph on one of his setup phazers. He also mentioned that the stock phazer skid has alot of friction and could easily show better numbers with their wheel kits.

Most I have ever seen with stock exhaust and the mods I have in sig is 93 mph.Last weekend near Pelican lake on a road with Ice base and about 2 in of crusty snow.Everyone buddy with GPS said 85mph and he was right behind me.It is real common to see 83-88 for me.Takes perfect conditions like said for anymore.I looked and I was at 11,550 rpm.I have 17t top gear and di not lose any top speed after clutching for it.
