play in jack shaft

How tight should the collar be on the shaft? I can't seem to get the lock nut tight enough so that the collar does not move on the shaft. I can put the spanner wrench on the nut and when I tighten it the whole assembly spins on the shaft, I know this will cause problems. I tried the secondary backwards trick but it won't get any tighter. I guess I will have to bring it back to the dealer to get tightened down!

BTW I did have wear on my jackshaft, a new one was on back order so I bought it to a local machinist and he fixed it for me. Waiting on parts is the killer!

i hear your frustration. hand warmers that suck, excessive hyfax wear, having to add an extra heat exchanger to help with cooling. all these items yamaha must be aware of. consumers shouldn't have to deal with these problems. they should be taken care during design. i wish companies would take care of things like this instead of trying to cut corners.

The drama continues!

I got the sled back form the dealer on Friday, they tightened the locking collar for me, went for my first ride today and now the top seal in the chain case cover is leaking. Now I have to take it all apart again and inspect the damage. Hopefully it's just the top bearing in the cover. I am at my wits end!!

My 2 cents (please don't take offense) . . .

I think the design is fine, but I question the workmanship and/or skill of whoever is doing your service work. The type of problems you are having should not occur if service is done properly.

There are a far greater number of sleds that do not have these problems than the number that have them.

I bought Yamaha for the reliability and peace of mind, and I am having more "little" issues than I ever had with any sled. I had Polaris from 2000-2008 and never had anything like this, I am tired of defending Yamaha, I have spent enough fixing their mistakes. I don't think I will be riding Yamaha next year, this is the final straw!!

Another 2 cents- I disagree because most people work on their own sleds and the manufacturer designed a fastening system that requires two special tools to tighten it in an area with very little access. In my case I went to the trouble of making a special tool so that I wouldn't have to go to the dealer and it still worked loose even though I got lots of torque on it (or so I thought). I later found out that it has happened to several others so in this case I'm saying bad design and would bet that lots of Yamaha techinicians would agree. Overall though I think they did a pretty good job of making the sleds reliable.

What I have found is that on the apex type chassis if you try to tighten the nut from the clutch side it is very difficult to get it tight. When you think its tight if you take out the gas tank and get a good look at it you find its not tight at all . I tighten the nut from inside ( with fuel tank removed ) I think its easier to remove the tank than it is to take the chain cas apart and while your in there you can check the exhaust do-nuts. Most all the Yamaha problems can be fixed by the owner just read the forums on Ty and ask questions when stumped. Complaining will only get you worked up and probably not the help your looking for

My 2 cents, I paid good money for this sled, if it was given to me and Yamaha said here take it, ride it, but it's yours, do not come back with a problem or complain about it then I would agree with you. But since I did buy it, I feel I have every right to "Complain" as you say.

I didn't say you did'nt have a right to complain. I just meant that it would get you no-where . You can fix the small problems or sell it and take your chances with somethin else. Alot of 800 cc two stroke sleds have failed in my riding circle but the yamaha always seem to be able to make it back home on its own power
