Possible fix for metal filings in chain case.

I emailed the site yesterday, and they do not have plugs 8mm in size. I didn't ask them about adding a magnet to an OEM plug though. That would probably be the best way to go.

Has anyone checked the clearance between where the drain plug goes and the back of the chain/gear. There may not be enough room for stuff to get stuck to the magnet. Might be A better idea to get a Larger drainplug and drill and tap the front of the case where there is more room. Two drain plugs wouldnt hurt. Then the filings would be removable. You would have to tip the sled up on its side tho to remove the plug without loosing oil.

Easy solution.... drill a hole in the chaincase somewhere that there IS clearance, tap it, and put in a magnet plug. Its best to find a spot where the oil won't be blasting it too hard, try off to the FRONT of the case

There is not enough clearance around the dipstick to fit a magnet there.

I think you could put a magnet from a GM automatic transmission in the chain case. I know the magnet in the 4L80E is about 5 cm X 5 cm and 3 mm thick. If you cut in 2 (one for you and one for your buddy) It would fit inside the chaincase. I have seen the magnets glued with some glue in the bellypan in some transmissions.

Let's use a scientific method of solving this problem. Somebody pull an Apex dipstick out, and see if it picks up a small steel object, like a washer, or nut.

I've got a broken leg, but I'm about ready to take my walker over an icy driveway, to do it myself.

what i don't understand is why would yamaha stop put in magnetic dipstick?

Especially since the 2008 service manual says it is magnetic

that's crazy, maybe someone screwed up at the factory, that should be a no brainer for yamaha to do, the viper handwarmers will burn you hands of and vipers have a magnetic dipstick, some drop the ball on this one

I just ran out in socks to find dipstick NOT magnetic! I tried 5 different washers & even metal filings on floor. NOTHING! Since i've blown 2 chaincases, this thread is of interest to me. I will be changing track next week so when my chaincase is apart i will make all measurements for possible clearances & options...

LOL....you guys didnt beleive me?...no magnet!!!

Nope. Didn't believe you. But...you were right.

I took mine apart the first day i owned sled,to install mhy predator track....and the very first thing i noticed when filling the chaincase and checking levels(after 25 years of DOOS w/ magnets) was no magnet!

interesting how big a ROLL the magnet plays in bearing life isnt it?

Dan

i just don't understand what there logic would be behind it not puting in a magnetic one, are the 07 and 08 the same way?
