I did a search on this, not much discussion. I know it's recommended, but do I have to run 91 octane fuel? My old Apex and Rx-1 ran just fun with 87. Some places don't carry it in the UP. Will I run into detonation issues or cause engine problems if I get into a pinch and have to run 87?

The older Apex, Attack, RX1 were tuned for 87 and it was the recommended octane in the manual. 2011 and newer are tuned for 91, as per the manual, but have a knock sensor which should allow you to run lower octane in a pinch. 91 is recommended.
Many on here have run both, in all generations without issue. Your default should be what is recommended in the manual.

no problem running 87. i personally run premium as recommended all the time because it does get better mileage/ranch as well as better performance. you could always carry an additive if you are worried.
