so as I ponder my clutch rattle on my 05 venture it makes me want to know more about clutches... what is the life span of a primary clutch on o 4 strokes? my warrior hasnt been touched in 10k miles- should it be? does pulling ice totes or sleighs shorten the life of the primary? what will happen if it granades? can someone educate me a bit on this? thanks in advance!

If you keep them clean and check them every 1000miles they can go forever. If it grenades it out of its way lol. I clean them with HOT Dawn dish soap with bleach. I put in new springs every year. If you have not touched them in 10k miles I'm sure there in need of work.

You can also take the weights and front cover off and run it through the dish washer while the wife is out shopping....just don't let her catch you in the act! I usually just spray mine down with Simple Green, then get an old toothbrush, and scrub, then rinse with hot water. But I have tossed it in the dishwasher like I said. It comes out squeaky clean! Best to do at least once a year!

thanks guys...good to know and I need to actually get one apart I guess and see what is what. maybe there is stuff in the tech section on how to clean ect... by the way what is at risk besides junk in there using the dish washer? residue?

I think the best thing to do is blow them out with compressed air fairly often.

I'd at least flush it out with very hot water before attempting the dish washer treatment. Best to scrub it out first with soap and a tooth brush or something similar. Then if you want it really clean throw it in the dish washer. There shouldn't be too much residue depending on the ability of your washer. I set mine to high temp wash, rinse, pot scrubber, and hi temp dry and the insides of the washer came out looking fine, but I did cycle and empty load through with detergent just to make sure all of the gunk was out.

the sliding sheave has a bushing that is replaceable, just like the outer cover, but the clutch must be taken apart to change it. dealer has the tool. heat, dirt, and vibration kill clutches. the 4 strokes are very smooth, the clutches run fairly cool unless alignment is out, and keeping them clean is up to you.

great info guys... with this awesome site I have slowly taken on more maint with my warrior and do everything except the clutches obviously..LOL. the venture is a new sled for me this year and it's really clean, but I should clean the primary to be sure. I guess loads of dust and junk maybe playing a role in my noise. what causes wear on the wieghts? dust?

The noise you are hearing is normal, bumping the idle up a little makes it a little less noticable. Clean with brake kleen and compressed air and you will be good to go.

What do you run your idle at. Mine runs great at 1,450........ My clutch has been terrific for 7,500 mile now. It's been much quieter than my riding buds pair of 08 vectors. my idle is around 1700 and "knock on wood" the primary is fine.... the venture clutch is the diesel and with it's rattle I was just thinking about the bigger picture and primaries in general.
your sled probly wasnt fixed yet. There is an update for the clutch buttons on the first few years of four strokes. Cost about 12 bucks and removes alot of noise, it came out in 06 I believe and came in all 06 and newer 4 strokes.
as for life, I have 17k on mine, Hondo has almost 50k on his and will go over that this winter, not sure how much rebuilding he has done on it but mine is stock. sheaves are warn a bit where most of the riding is done but that is it.
something that also removes some more rattle is to install the older stlye weight bushings in the fourstrokes, they are tighter.

so if I run the vin at my dealer they should tell me if it was done and if not they do for free correct?
not sure on the free part sometimes yamaha deems problems not warrenty but good will, they might give the part but you pay to put it on, sometimes they might sell a part for cheap, you pay to put it on
many of these items include,
viper rear heat exchanger
viper shocks
rail gussets for 05 rx1
there are many more
the vin should show if it was done under yamaha, you can tell if they are in it if you remove the spring cover and see if you can clunk the moveable sheave back and forth against the spider. The update puts o rings under the spider buttons and makes them fit snug.
