Two part question for the clutch guys in the crowd. #1 toward the end of yesterdays ride I started hearing a distinct and rather sharp knocking sound upon deceleration. I was thinking anything from chaincase to track ratcheting at the time and got back to the trailer and called it a day. Back at home I can replicate it in the air and it is coming from the primary when it disengages it is making 1 single "knock" everytime. I have over 3000K on the hammertime kit and have never noticed this nor any other problem with the clutch. I yanked the face plate off and checked it over and can find nothing obvious with weights or clutch and bushings. Possibly spring related? I will note I was very hard on it as far as on and off hard and often. " new 05 skid lets me pull the skis anytime I want 8) and after the first season and a half before ripsaw and skid I could never get any!
#2 I am wondering how you guys prefer to lube or not lube clutches. I/E some use slik-50, wd-40, etc. Or simply brakeleen and a blow gun often? I just clean them often so no oil to catch belt dust. Thanks

never, never lube anything in your clutches. Clean and dry is the only way to go. Get those junk hammertimes out before it costs you 500-600 in clutches parts. ===SRXSRULE===

I hear that sound too some times. I think maybe the shaft that your outer primary sheave slides on is getting a bit gummed up.

I'm making up this cleaning idea as I go, so here goes:

To clean it you'd have to pull the six 10mm bolts holding on the primary clutch face. Pull out the primary spring and slide the outer sheave all the way in. When you do this you'll see the full travel of the outer sheave. You may want to take brake (not carb) cleaner and spray it on the shaft as you move it in and out. It will probably leave gunk on the shaft as you slide the primary sheave back to the outer position. Keep wiping off the shaft as you do this until there is no more residue coming off the shaft onto your rag.
I think that will clean up that area. I can't think of another way. maybe someone else can?

It also could be your bushing around the large bolt on your primary. It's a round phenolic one and pressed into the primary. I have a new one in my shop to put in this week since mine is starting to deteriorate. Take a look at it while you have the primary cover off.

Good luck.

vtrxrider: When you pulled the clutch or Clutch cover off did you try moving the movable sheeve? I notice when we tested the Hammers on our Turbo sleds last year that the movable sheeve didn't move freely any more. I never got a change to see if it was a bushing problem or the main shaft the movable sheeve slides on.

If it's hanging up you have a problem. FYI I've tested every aftermarket weight on the market including every Heel Clicker ever made. This "the Hammer time" is the first weight I've ever had this kind of issue with. This was in all 5 of our test sleds.

I would tend to agree with Eric "SRXRULES" Remove them.

I'm going to be testing the Super Tips against my brothers sled with heavy Hitters this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. You might want to consider a change to one of these weights. Allen Ulmer and Matt from the speed Shop can help you with both weights. The setup I'm running came from Allen. Again I'll post results next monday!!!

I can't wait to hear how they work compared to the Heavy Hitters!

The Supertips look like an interesting weight.

Didn't Bender racing sell a weight similar to this years ago?

Thanks for the input everyone. Jtssrx: The sheave moves freely and it is not really hanging up as The noise is after it disengages "fully open" Just kind a Klack. Are you guys saying the weights after 3000+ trouble free miles and showing no signs of wear are all of a sudden making this noise! I am not debating which are better but I blew the wad on the 05 skid and if I go much further I will have a family revolt! I dont want to go back stock and cant ante up right now for hh or whatever. To used to winning!

Frostbite: I don't think Bender had a simular weight. I'll let you know when I get back how they ran.

vtrxrider: did you acctually pull the clutch and inspect everything with the Clutch cover off?

So I am to take the lack of reply that I did not go far enough into the clutch to know anything? If I had the puller I probably would have done it on the bench. :?

Interesting. I saw the same thing on a friend's '04 warrior but it made the "klak" sound both engaging and when the clutch fully disengaged. This I saw and heard on the stand but his complaint was that he heard it on the trail too. We then put my '03 RX-1 on the stand and tried it and the clutch did not make any noise. The weights and rollers were free. Putting a new belt on it seemed to reduce the noise when it engaged but not when it disengaged. We did not check into it any further at that time so I cannot say if the clutch was clean or not and possibly hanging up.
