I read in a magazine that the gear ratio reduction for the primary is changeable.

Not changeable to my knowledge and have not heard of it being changeable from anyone within Yamaha. I would have to believe the magazine is incorrect. It would be quite a job to change it.

I could see where you could maybe change out the gears and get more revs out of the engine without spinning the clutch as much, but why would you want to?
If you look at the dyno chart the power really starts to drop off after 11,500 rpm.

At peak HP (11,100 rpm) the primary clutch is only spinning 8100 rpm. Even at 12,200 engine rpm (rev limiter) the clutch would only spin 8900 rpm.
