I have to kind of rock the sled from side to side to get her into reverse (after rpm's drop to 2000 or so). Anyone familiar with this problem?

I think they are all pretty much like this. My 08 works pretty well, but do need to do the "wiggle" thing sometimes. I think you will find wiggling front to back will work better then side to side. Worst case you sometimes have to pick up the rear of the sled. Some guys were getting a "reverse fix" from the dealer which changed the shim thickness (I think it was removing one) behind the secondary clutch.

take it to your dealer and he should do an update free, shim in secondary and new belt. It will help with this problem woodz

Just to add to the above post. Yamaha has a bulletin on 07 and early release 08's with belt #8GK-17641-10 and will do a updateto belt #8GS-17641-00-00 and shim if you were having problems with reverse but, you have to ask. Hope this helps.

i have a 09 RTX and mine does it to. is there a fix for mine. sometimes shaking front to back works but other times ill drag it down the whole trailer and it never engages so then i turn it off for 15 sec and try again. this is a real pain especially if ur stuck.

We only have this problem on our 07FX when it is not fully warmed up.... hmmmm

start your sled, put it in reverse - if the light is blinking, grab the handle bars and move your body in a jerking motion like you are trying to move the sled backwards with your body motion. that will get it to shift into reverse. i used to jump on it and rock it, but this motion gets it every time.

MINE TOO

I HAVE AN 08 GT. IT SEEMS TO GET STUCK BETWEEN GEARS. SOMETIMES I HAVE TO ROLL IT 3 FEET. SOMETIMES THAT DOESN'T WORK EITHER. THE LAST TIME I STARTED IT COLD. IT ACTED LIKE I WASN'T EVEN PUSHING THE BUTTON. MAYBE IT WAS STILL IDLING TOO FAST. IT SEEMS LIKE IT ONLY ACTS UP WHEN I WANT TO BACK UP. IF I TRY IT JUST TO SEE IF IT WILL GO IN IT WORKS EVERY TIME. IT WENT OUT OF WARRANTY A WEEK AGO AND THE DEALER ACT LIKE THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE. I AM AFRAID IF I TAKE IT IN IT WON'T DO IT AND THEY WILL CHARGE ME. I CALLED YAMAHA AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD HAVE TO FIND A PROBLEM AND CALL R.T.A TO SEE IF IT IS COVERED. DOES ANYONE HAVE MORE INFO ON THE FIX SO I CAN DO IT MYSELF OR GIVE IT TO THE DEALER?
PS THIS IS MY WIFE'S SLED.

Are you letting your revs go below 2000 before trying to engage? And, you should try to engage before tilting the trailer if you are not, because it almost never engages on an incline.

Pain and embarrassing if you stop in the middle of a trail and have to back up for someone to pass. The problem with the VL being heavier and with two riders is that I have to get off and shake the tail end because I usually cannot move it from the front and my wife doesn't get mad enough to be able to shake the rear.

Mine has the updated belt and shim and it has changed it a lot!! It now engages about 10-20% of the time instead of 80 to 90% with just the shim (and belt squeal). But the squeal is pretty well gone. A funny thing with the new belt is that you get something like a second engagement shortly after starting off something like an automatic transmission!

Keep trying I guess,
