I have a question about a shovel. I live in MI so I don't need avi stuff but I thought it would be a good idea to bring a shovel with me as I ride by myself a lot if I can get up during the week. My question is I found a shovel at advanced auto that had a detachable Handel that extends and it's only $10, art the say hmk or klim shovels that much better for 5 times the cost or should the $10 one serve my needs. Thanks for the help.

Only you know how much you use a shovel. As long as you're not chipping ice with it its probably fine. For 10 bux its better then nothing. A sno bunjee is 5x more useful than a shovel typically though.

Metal blade only. Plastic will break too easy. Don't go anywhere without one and used plenty to get myself out.

Buy a metal one!
I've spent enough on plastics shovels to buy the metal one, and I still bought a metal one.

Mine not only has a detachable and extending handle, but the handle has a saw built into it. Comes in handles when you get stuck in some thick brush (or get run off into the pickers by some crazy oncoming traffic
). I carry mine around in my backpack.

I think I'm putting it in a backpack. Then I can pack a saw and stuff for the just in case.

We use a plastic kids shovel bungied onto the back rack. They are very tough unless you are planning to try to shovel through ice, cheap, light, decent length handle and come in different colours. Have used them for several seasons without any problem ... not quite as compact as the folding / telescopic ones but for under $10 you can't beat it!

Mines similar to that but with a metal telescopic handle. It doesnt get used a lot, but its plenty tough. If you can strap the handle to the side, with the blade wrapped around the rear bumper its out of the way and less likely to be a problem then if it were in your back pack.

I have seen some collapsable shovels real cheap at Princess Auto here in Ontario. However, they dont carry as nice as the more expensive one I bought and carry in my HKM backpack.
The more expensive ones fit-in the back country packs real nice. The telescopic handle comes off and mouns on the side and the shovel slips into a sheath at the back of the pack.
You can find some good deals on ebay.
And dont fret about carrying one. I ride on my own a fair bit and it makes quick work out of something that may take 1/2 an hour and kill your back.

Your pack and gear is best on your back! If you should happen to become separated from your sled, you'll still have your gear.
