I want to install a water temperatue gauge and I'm looking at putting a tee fitting in the vertical hose coming up to the thermostat housing like some others have done, is that fitting a 1" OD that would insert into the present hose :?

It is one inch ID hose so yes a tee would be one inch OD. The only thing I would worry about is restricting the coolant flow.

Mikey and RX,
I was going to use a copper tee which you could get at a hardware or Home Depot and other stores and than sweating in a fitting for the threaded adaptor for the temp probe. The copper fitting would be much less restrictive than a cast fitting

That's exactly what I did Bob.

Hey lakercr,
How did it work out for you? Did you use a 2 1/16" hole saw to bore your hole for the gauge in the dash or 2"?

pretty sure I used 2". i would make a test hole in a scrap piece of something to be sure though.

Thanks lakecr
Bob: I don't have any pics right now, but I will tell you what I have used. Faria Marine instruments temperature guage. We use these in marine I/O applications. The sender clamps to the coolant pipe off of the cyl. head and is very accurate. EZ to install and no mods to coolant system. The guage is a basic temp guage, but if you look around there may something more stylish. You can find them at a Kimpex marine dealer part # 706174. The Faria part # is 13009. If you can't find this particular one, call on any marine dealer in your area and look through the guage selection or catalogue for a marine temp guage with the clamp on sender.
If I shoot some pics tomorrow, I will post them.

I used a 2" and cut the rest out with a knife so it fits tight.

G Man you dont want to check the temp off of the cylinder head as it is on the cold side of the thermostat at least I dont think you would want to seeing how the hottest temps would be on the heat exchanger side of the thermostat.

Hi Mikey. Thanks for posing the question. I should have given a little more detail as to why I chose that particular spot. If you follow your coolant flow on the RX engine, you will see that the coolant flows into the metal pipes out of the cylinder head. The coolant then travels down the coolant pipe and dumps into the thermostat housing below the thermostat. Coolant always flows down this path with no obstruction by the thermostat.
Also, as the pipe at the head is metal and is attached to the head, it is fairly close to the temp of the head. Therefore, this may be one of the better places to measure temp. I hope this sheds some light.
Thanks,
G Man

Gman, post a pic if you can.
Do you think one of these sensors will work with a Summit gauge
Thanks.

Thanks.
I put my sender in the hose going to the right running board. It works great usually about 165deg. F.
