Whats the deal with the ram air kits? Are they good, do they make anymore power?

If you are talking about the one where it replaces the top of the air box with a cut out version, all I can say is it sounds weird in a not so good kinda way & zero performance gains, ( had one one my 07 RTX). As far as the one Ulmer has, I do believe it is cut out on the lower part of the airbox, don't know about performance gains however, you might have to contact him unless someone that has his airbox can fill you in on the performance.
i have ulmer air box mod on my 06 3-4 hp gain on top end

colder air+ hot engine=more power. my 08 apex picked up speed with my own version of a slp airbox.

How can the one on top of the airbox not gain anything? Cold air from outside easy access directly into the throttle bodies? I am sure the Ulmer kit is very good too, but if cold air to the motor is the key then cutting the top of your airbox and letting it get air and maybe even getting some forced air into the box has to be good. It is loud and funny sounding though.

I've bought the airlid from Ulmer. I asked him about the one that has the cutouts on the bottom portion of the airbox and he told me they produced the same power. For what it's worth...
I had this on since day one, so can't tell you if it actually did anything.

Ulmer spent tons of time on dyno with different intakes & he will tell you most actually LOST power...

When i cut my airbox > only the 2 first front part of the bumps i had to give it more fuel with the pc3.
That means more air is going in at speed + fuel = more power.
Airbox by itself you may get couple horse.
Think yamaha has it closed factory to keep it quiet and the chance of any debris from going thru and down throttle bodies.
After airbox ,pc3 and full exhaust its much quicker and faster than stock ,but many will say that this cant be..
Why would ulmer make and sell one if it makes less hp

Ulmer found his hole @ bottom worked with no extra fuel. He tried MANY other variations that LOST power without or with fuel. I was just saying that without dyno proof, you could be loosing power...

I don't understand the logic here. A robot "a computer" is precisely and I mean precisely controlling any and all air as well as any and all fuel that enters that engine as it precisely down to the nats #*$&@ mixes that fuel and air mixture to exactly how IT wants it to be. If the engine is running too lean, it lets in more fuel, too rich it retards the fuel. When you are talking "cold" air you mean dense air. It doesn't matter because the computer controls the mixture. The engine is already, due to the environmental wackos" running way way too lean and starving of fuel as it is.

What you're saying sounds good, but is not always true. That computer is designed to control fuel under the the parameters of the way it was designed i:e stock. You MAY gain a few HP with an airbox mod, but you may loose a little done incorrectly. Just ask Ulmer. Even toomanytoys admits he added pc3. Then once you add more fuel & air you will need to get rid of it i:e exhaust. I ran 4 different air box mods back to back to back & lost or didn't gain anything. All i'm saying is, don't guess cuz you might actually LOOSE power. If it's been tested & proven, air box mods can gain a few HP...

This is true in a closed loop system with an oxygen sensor. The Apex is open loop and the mixture is preset and the ecu has no way of telling different exhaust temps etc.

Real world I never noticed any difference from stock to mod when I had an Ulmer airbox with PCV on my 06 Attak.

Once I put on a Ram Air lid on my Apex, I could walk away from my brother in law's modded Polaris 800. Before the lid, it was pretty close. Even he said that it made a difference.
