So after a long ride on Sunday, I ran out of gas just as I was putting the sled on the trailer.

I was only able to fill 8.8 gallons, isn't the tank more like 10 gallons?

The fuel pick-up shouldn't have anything to do with capacity should it? Your seld should hold 10 gal. My fuel light comes on when there are 3 gallons left in the tank so I can ride a good 40 miles with my fuel light on. Did you buy the seld new or used. Did the previous owner put a smaller tank on? I know some of the new apexes have smaller tanks like the 2010 mtx only has a 7 gal tank and the 09? (correct me if im wrong) has a 9.4 gal tank.

He's talking about the thing that sucks gas out of the bottom of the tank. If it isn't at the bottom of the tank, then it won't fully drain the tank and therefore it takes less fuel to get it back to the top.

So this "pick-up" is what I would assume a hose in the bottom of the tank? Seems odd to me that this would float up or unattach but I guess it would make more sense if we knew what it looked like.

This sounds about normal. Mine shut itself down one day when there was still about a gallon left. I am wondering if the computer shuts it down when there is an interruption of fuel to the injectors like when a low level of fuel is sloshing back and forth and not always getting to the pick-up. Since it happened I have always calculated my range based on 9 gallons.

No, it revved up slightly and died, so the computer isn't shutting it off, it's leaning out and dieing.

Perhaps when I pulled up on the trailer the last gallon went to the back of the tank and it sucked air...but still, 1.2 gallons seems like a lot. Also, it seems like the pickup should be in the back of the tank, I would rather lose power on a downhill rather than an uphill....maybe i'll check on the position of the fuel pickup this summer.

06 had biggest tank capacity 07 and newer had same size tank physically but held almost 1 gallon less because of the thickness of plastic the tank is made of. true story.

Fuel pump pickup is at the rear of the tank but it is slightly higher in the middle of tank than at the sides (I cleaned out my fuel tank earlier this year and found it easiest just to take out fuel pump and reach right in tank with your hand and a shop towel to soak up remaining fuel) so with this said the fuel tank held around 2 or 3 cups of fuel after I originally siphoned as much as I possibly could (remaining fuel was slightly below the level of the pickup) when tank/machine is level. Hope this helps. My machine took 7.8 Imp. gallons to fill to the bottom of plastic sleave in fill spout. So the moral of the story is if you run out of fuel there should be 2 cups or so left (maybe less cause the pickup has a wicking pad about the size of a deck of cards so it will wick up sloshing around fuel).

I have an 06 attak. I found out last weekend that I can go 145 miles on a tank of gas. I also found out that the gas station was 146.5 miles from where we started. My sled ran out of gas and died. My wife towed me the last 1.5 miles. She had never towed anybody before. The tow rope got some slack in it and wrapped around the left ski which made my sled want to go to the right really hard. My wife never stopped or looked back at all so I got tired of trying to keep my sled from getting "towed" into the bushes so I turned the key and it started up. I was now able to ride my sled the last little bit about two feet off of her bumper, still tied to her sled but not not being pulled by the left ski anymore.
To make a long story short.

My sled ran out of gas and when I got to the gas station I was able to put 9.8 gallons in it.
